OIL LEAKS IN HUBS - REBUILD

HI,

My 84 Lux has a leak on the outside on one hubs and the inside on the other side, so im up for a rebuild on both sides?

Im more than happy to dive into this kind of thing my self, but wondering if anyone has redone the seals in their own hubs before and if they have any tips.

or alternatively has some one done it and found it way too much trouble?

I have found kits including:

1 x OUTER WHEEL BEARING CUP & CONE

1 x INNER WHEEL BEARING CUP & CONE

1 x HUB SEAL

1 x TAB WASHER

1 x AXLE SHAFT GASKET

1 x HUB GASKET

Are their other seals in the hub or should this kit take care of it?

Oil could be from the diff. The diff oil seals could need replacing.

There shouldn't be oil in your hubs, If it is oil leaking out it is coming from your diff, you will have to do inner axle seals.

OK Thanks,

On one side the oil will leak a very small amount of oil onto the outside of the rim.

ON the other side (only started this week on a long drive) its sprayed oil all over the joint on the inside of the wheel.

if it is the diff seals how hard is this job to do at home?

Heaps of write ups on www.ih8mud.com.au Easy enough job, just time consuming. Have plenty of rags, then get more rags. Maybe bribe someone with beer that knows what there doing. Allow a weekend if your running alone or a day if you have help. You'll need the socket to remove the wheel bearing nuts. And you'll need more rags, and degreaser. And more rags. I showed my mate how to do his maybe two weekends ago and the kit he bought, plus kingpin and wheel bearings for both sides cost him $210.

sounds like a job worth doing if I want to keep the car, but im thinking of upgrading so i might just fit a second hand unit and save a few days work and a few curses from she who must be obeyed when I leave black greasy marks in the kitchen.

Yeah mate I've done it on my Rocky.

Pretty easy, took me a while because I didn't know what I was doing and there are no real workshop manuals available.

Get yourself a workshop manual for your rig if you are unsure about doing it and you will be fine.

When I did mine I replaced wheel bearings as well as I had everything off so I figured I might as well.

I don't know what part of sydney you're in but I got myself a "Steering Knuckle" kit from ABC Bearings in Brookvale.

I'd also add to that list the brass bush in the spindle
If it's worn the axle will move around allowing oil to bypass the seal

Where's that brass bush?

Not sure my daihatsu had the same setup. Any ideas of the troopy will have the same brass bush because I will have to do mine when I get the cash

Either a bush or needle rollers. It supports the cv in the spindle where the wheel bearing sits over
