Here are some pics of the prototype aluminium diff centre that I have been running (without incident) on the MudCow for the last year or so.
I pulled the gearbox apart last night for the first time since I installed them and was pleased to find that they are as good as the day they went in.
The conventionally glued diff that I was running at the other end isn't looking quite as healthy...
They aren't easy to make as you have to balance the diff now that the diff spur gear is relying on the alu centres for centering. The hex's in the alu have to be fabbed with a fair bit of precision to make it work properly. I press fit the brass into the alu for a nice secure fit. |

Yeah, I am making a pair of locked diffs for 12uke plus one more for the MudCow.
I might consider making a few more for others, but only limited numbers. |

Nice one JK.
Matt and I are actualy indiscussions with a local machinist in Port Macquarie at the moment about machining a similar design for production.
It's something we've been looking at for some time and I wasn't aware you were running that in your front diff until you mentioned it at the last meet. Hope you don't think we're treading on any toes, but it may take some 'manufacturing' pressure off you and let you get back to building the next crawler project.

Certainly not treading on my toes. I do all of this for fun, I don't make any $$$ out of it, especially after I buy the tools needed to make all the stuff.
Look forward to seeing your design for the centres. My latest prototype (just finished today) has worked out really well. |

They took a little longer to make than I thought they would but they are well worth the effort. I also made myself another one to match the original prototype in the MudCow.
As the brass hex is a tight press-fit they have zero play in them and are a fit and forget item. The three bolts are permanently locked with red loktite. |

Thanks guys. If there is enough interest I might consider making a few more (in very limited quantities). Email me at JK@mudcow.com if you are interested.
Jay, welcome! Good to have you here.
For those that don't know Jay, here is his website with his awesome 1:1 ROKTOY and equally impressive 1:10 ROKTOY(s) ha ha...

DirtPigS, GRIZZLY JIM aka Jim Rybka in the U.S.A. Been lurking around here lately, real interested in your modified diffs. What is the possiblity of getting a set made(front & rear) for one of my clods and shipped to me in the town of Coventry, in the state of Rhode Island, zip code 02816, U.S.A..
What would be the overall cost?? PLMK, TTYL, Thanks JIM R. at jmrybka@cox.net |
