Please excuse my ignorance but what are the differences between the two types of controllers?

MK The difference between the two is very simple.
The mechanical is crap and the esc is good.
No the mechanical uses heat sinks to get rid of unused power from the battery to control the current flow to the motor thus the bad run times.they usually have three steps ,slow medium and fast .
An electronic speedy uses fets or digital technoligy to control the current flow and is alot more efficient.Depending on how many fets are in a certain speedy determains the throttle control you have .I own (just for example a V4 R speedy in a touring car(4 fets)and a mate uses a V8(8fets)his is alot smoother than mine.
The esc produces longer run times, smoother throttle response, can handle higher current flow(eg lower turn motors)and is a lot less bulk you have to carry in your truck or car .
hope this helps
