I bought a diesel (with a DTS Turbo) 100 series cruiser with 72'000 km on the clock and took it into Toyota for its 80'000 km service. When I went to pick it up the manager asked how long the knock has been in it?.

Long story short they found a knock in number 6 piston. They took the big end bearings out and #1,2,3 bearings look like they've done 300'00 km but #4,5,6 hardly show any wear at all, representing its age. Yet this isn't the cause of the knock in the engine? Has there been any drama's with big ends in 1HZ's?.

The truck's been serviced every 5000 km according to the log book and stamped by toyota dealer. They now believe that the knock would be coming from either a bent conrod, cracked piston or a sloppy gudgon pin, and the excessive wear in the bearings to be from excessive oil heat generated from the turbo?.

They are taking the head off tomorrow and are going to check the pistons.

So far this is all covered under factory warranty or DTS warranty as the turbo was fitted on the truck brand new.

thanks

there hasnt been any known problems since the early 1990s. when there was a problem with tolerances on the big end bearings in early 1HZs and this caused a lot of failures, this problem was denied by toyota but many were covered under warranty.

Maybe first in a new batch??? But doubtful, if it has full logbook services then okay, if there was no oil changes that would explain it. Dunno, best of luck. My boss had a 1999 100 series with ARB turbocharger, never had a problem, recently traded it on the latest model turbo diesel.

BJ the early bearing probs wernt in the 1hzs it was in the direct injection turbos 1hdt from 1990-1991 that was the series 1s
The problem was that they had 2 bearing manufactures and they lost track of which bearings went into which vehicles therefore they replaced the bearings that came in stuffed
Which in the long run cost Toyota (cause of stuffed cranks)

Well I went into toyota today and the've removed the head and found pistons 1 and 2 have scored the bores. They are also saying that this is because it has an aftermarket turbo on it and it's now up to DTS to say if they will cover it. cussing

Now I've got to wait untill Tuesday untill anything can be done.

Gordon,

Please tell me how can I tell if my 1HD-T is from that series of engines? Can you tell from the engine's serial numbers? Mine is out of the original truck.

No, the early ones had a single intake and exhaust valves per cylinder (the 1HD-T) until 1994. In 1995 the 1HD-FT came out with dual intake and exhaust valves.
