Hi all

Have the new diff in, and new axle bearings, and everything put back together now.

Got in it to take it for a spin, and notice that when I selected first, there was like another 'gate' that allowed the gear lever to swing around, clockwise, so as it touched the dashboard!!!! It still selects all the gears fine. It happens in second as well, but does not swinf as far, I think mainly due the the 4wd lever in the way.

When driving, the lever would vibrate its way around and into the dashboard. there does not seem to be any unusual noise or anything.

Anybosy got any idea what would cause this, and what needs to be fixed, and if it will cause any damage just leaving it?

Thanks

Stew

just a guess, but it sounds like the selectors in the gearbox need to be replaced

Hey

Thanks for your reply. It does change gears fine, and I have no trouble finding gears.

I was thinking that maybe there is some sort of 'gate' or 'map' that gives a path for the gear changer thing to travel to select the gears. maybe this has broken or something.

did you have the gear stick out at any stage? if the spring loaded bayonet-style shifter retainer hasn't been properly reinstalled, it could cause those symptoms - only the rubber boots are holding your stick down. test - lift the stick straight up in neutral.

otherwise it could be the rubber anti-vibration joint in the middle of the gearstick has come unstuck. the lift-it-up test will test that too.

cheers

Hi

Thanks for your reply dumbdunce.

I did not touch the shifter, the clostest I got to it was undoing the tailshaft.

I will do the test you suggested, see what happens. Is the bit of rubber you are talking about, anti-vibration joint, easy to replace? Does the egarbox have to come out, or can it be done from above?

Thanks again,

Stew

either fix can be done just by removing the rubber boots, no need to drop the trans. while you're at it, check the two poly bushings - one on the very end of the shifter, where the shifter attaches to the shift linkage, and one under the hemispherical bit of the shifter. the first one is about the size of the end of the average index finger, the other one is a ring about 4cm across.
