Rare Photos
These are time-lapse photos of the recovery of the USS Cole.
In the first photo, a transport ship is "flooded" to allow it underneath the disabled USS Cole.
Cole was transported from Aden to Pascagoula by the Norwegian heavy transport ship M/V Blue Marlin.
As the photos progress, the USS Cole is secured to the deck of the transport ship.
Then the transport is slowly raised to the surface of the water to get underway.

you cant, a ship has to be perfectly balanced or it snaps in two.. there has to be even pressure on all areas of the hull. notice the bow? that wouldnt let the ship be even if it was straight on the deck of the transport ship, hence it would snap in 2 like a toothpick.

I'm guessing there must be some serious mofo pumps to expel all that water?

Sonar dome? Requires the front of the ship to overhang because the dome on the bow hangs lower than the rest of the keel line see in pic 2

Sonar Dome? I don't think so, although I am probably wrong.

My thoughts would make that a bulbous bow, reduces vibrations of the hull and increases fuel efficiency.

Yep that is right, they can design a bulbous bow to reduce the drag and increase fuel efficiency. A sonar transciever housed below the base line, and needs to have the best part of 180degress "view" of the bottom of the ocean, like the one on USS Cole and most of the Cruisers/Destroyers around the world and HMAS Hobart (the boat my boss served on)

Google explains well

google wrote:

Sonar domes have typically been fitted to the bows of combatants principally to house the sonar transducers. They are traditionally located below the baseline of the ship and consequently have only a small effect on wavemaking resistance. Studies as to the effects of sonar dome design have generally taken dome size and location into consideration. On the other hand, reductions in resistance achieved by the addition of a bulbous bow to a hullform are well documented. The reduction in drag is derived primarily by the lowering of wavemaking resistance through attenuation of the bow wave system of the ship, and to a lesser extent by the reduction of viscous resistance due to a smoothing of the flow around the forebody. (1)

Hydrodynamic principles dictate that a bow bulb can be optimized for a specific speed (or a small range of speeds). A bow bulb providing the greatest potential for reduced fuel consumption, is therefore a compromise on the optimization at any one speed. Principal geometric differences between a sonar dome and a nabla type bulb are depicted in Figure 1. The location of the center of area near the free surface, and the reduced beam-to-height ratio, are in direct contrast to the geometry of the sonar dome.
