ok guys ur all probly gonna laugh at me a redicilious ammount but a bloke must look at all options, so..... failing to get a V8 or a newer v6 wat is the bost possible option of pulling a few more pony's out from unda the hood of the 80, one of the things ive heard was
*u can use holden compatable carbies on it for example a holly carbie...?
*possible to get a mild cam for the 3F?
*an injected head on it?
* then the usual new pistons, rings, gaskets, headwork, and gas/ gas tunning.
if any one can give me info, or, point mein the right direction to find out more about the ol 3f motors and in wat way they can be improved, yes i know i hav crazy ideas, but if i didnt i would be way to borein!
cheers guys
TY. |

This maybe of help too, a little more stock 2FE using the 2F block and 3FE head.
http://forum.ih8mud.com/nm-high-desert-cruisers/147541-da40-baby-steps-forward.html
Basics:
Early 80's came with either a 3F (carby) with manual or 3FE (injected) with auto. To make a 2FE you need the head and injection system from a 3FE. All interchangeable and bolt on. You also require the 3FE ECU
The taller 2FE may require more room under the hood in an 80, but a 2" body lift would fix that. All in all a stock 2FE can be done on a budget and is not a bad upgrade. I would recommend removing all the EGR and de smogging it too. |

I had a j75 with carb'd 3f on gas
more power
i got a custom race cam ground up (seemed to hold the gears heaps better when flogging through sandy track or down the beach, i prob lost a bit of low low down tourqe but thats what low range is for)
got the head shaved for more compression(def better for gas to)
got bigger valves put in the head and double valve spring to suit inj 304 holden
Never got around to getting more fuel/ changing the carb in it it def needed more juice top end but still went well
sounded sweet and lumpy losts of people would think it wa a v8 which is sh1t becuase its was not what i was after, people just never hear a lumpy 6 and presume lump is v8 and people asked why waste your time doing up a truck motor just think about how mush power the 265 hemi's were getting for a "6 truck motor"
i thought it was something different to but but still no were near a v8 conversion for power |

You cant go to radical with the 3f, but a 240 grind cam 2-3 deg advanced on install, the carby to suit, some extractors, a ford XE ign set up in the dizzy with good ign and coil pack, and they should get along better than a standard one.
A turbo on inj model can also work ok, but 5-7 psi should be the max with the crank set up. |

tyler its only your toy. just live with its performance.
otherwise you will end up spending a packet and its still a 3f.
think of the lockers, cage, barwork, winch and all the rest you can spend money on instead. |

Hey Assasin,
How much of a difference would a better than stock coil make? Any recommendations? I'm currently running a VK commodore distributor.
Anyone know how much can be shaved off the head and what kind of compression a 80 series 3F can handle?
Dads old FJ62 had HEAPS shaved off the head, had to shave the lifters to get adjustment back, but we never measured how much of a shave it was Thing flew though for a 3F |

straight lpg and a turbo
been running my fj45 now for over a year tho ive only dont 5000kays if that
have finally worked out the kinks and accepted that without spending big $$ low boost and keep it simple is the best option
running 6psi no intercooler and stock everything even running a points dizzy (with a electronic conversion box)
total i spent was around 2500 including a new clutch and new radiator |

a bloke at wanneroo 4x4 in perth told me once he has a custom made turbo kit for a 3f he got it of his brothers old 6 wheeler cruiser ute and would sell it for 2g or something that was w while ago, i would have bought it but he told me about it after done my comprseeion raising to my motor
better yet sell your 3f 80 series and get a 1fz-fe 80 series and turbo it for huge ponys |

Regarding the points dizzy, we have had some that use the points as a switch to tell the box when to fire, and when the points get dirty [and they will, no spark to keep the face clean] they go into multi spark, this is why we convert them to falcon modsule hall effect type set up.
A coil on its own would make < 1%. |

Cam, just have yours ground, you will need some better valve springs to go with it though.
I think we used to use a Holden ones. |

if you end up using aftermarket replacement pistons, check the oil escape holes around the oil rings, and make sure they are very similar to factory ones.
Iwould be surprised if the pistons were FUBAR though, |

With that cam, running 98 octane or lpg I would aim for around 9.3:1. |
