Hi,

As the subject says, I'm slipping out of 4th gear when not under load. Under power or deceleration it stays in fine, but is often slipping out on coast.

Over the last few months, 2nd and now 4th are 'feeling' like they don't engage as far, as in the gear lever doesn't move as far down as it used to. Even if they are not engaged properly, that shouldn't mean it should slip out easily I would have thought, maybe it would.....???

I changed gearbox oil with spec oil earlier this year and have just completed a 5k run through the Pilbara with plenty of roughish roads. When I changed the oils before the trip it was not dirty. The rough roads do not appear to have made any difference to the gearbox, apart from keeping it at running temp for longer than it normally is.

I've done some searching and not found any reference to this being a common problem with these five speed boxes, nor whether it could be shifter related or a problem with the gearbox itself.

Any hints appreciated.

BTW, this trip was completed on 100% Canola oil in a 12HT.

sounds like a shifter problem to me

i have been told theres a plastic bush on the end of the gear stick that wears, although i havent looked inside the shifter box myself.

Like was said before there is a plastic cup at the bottom of the shift that wears, as well as a seat that wears on the shifter. Pieces can breaqk off and fall inside the tranny if not careful. I would pull the carpt, shifter boots and look and see what is going on - something might be binding.

The H55F shifters are known to pop out of gear after a few hundred/k/kms, not sure yours would do it unless the odo was rolled back or something.

This sounds like it could the nylon shift seat as mentioned above, i have some diagrams of this if you would like ? Send me a pm and i will send them to you.

I replaced this nylon shift seat / bushing at 240,000 on my 5 Speed and the original wasn't very badly worn.

Before / After the replacement the car would occasionally pop out of 5th gear on the highway when i back off / coast and when it's not under load (exactly the same as yours does in 4th by the sounds of it)

My gearbox also doesn't like going into 2nd and a slight clunk once in a while into 4th ?

Let us know how you go.

Dan
