Earthmover terror rampage

Three people were killed and up to 39 injured when a man ploughed an earthmoving machine into buses and a car in Jerusalem today before he was shot dead in the driver's seat.

Police described the incident as a terrorist attack and said it appeared to have been politically motivated. Initial reports said the machine's driver was Palestinian but the BBC said he was an Israeli Arab with a criminal record.

Chaos erupted as the man drove the heavy vehicle along busy Jaffa Road in west Jerusalem, overturning a public bus, severely damaging another bus, and picking a car up "like a toy,'' one witness said.

Several people opened fire at the earthmover driver, who eventually was killed, journalists said.

Israel's national rescue service confirmed two deaths and said at least 22 people were wounded, including at least 14 people who had been taken to hospital. BBC World News cited ambulance officials saying three people had died, and 39 were injured.

Israel police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld described it as "terrorist incident''.

'I fired two shots at the windshield'

Policewoman Eleanor Nachum was among those who opened fire on the driver as the machine was still moving.

"I saw the tractor coming around into the bus. I fired two shots at the windshield of the tractor and I think I hit him. Two policemen jumped on the tractor, but he continued driving,'' she said.

A security guard at a building in the area said: "I saw the tractor ramming a car on Jaffa street, people started to shout and I came out the bank and I saw the truck. I shot the driver and the truck stopped.''

The incident took place just outside a building housing several international media outlets in the heart of the city, where a major road construction project has been underway for weeks.

Traffic halted, and hundreds of people fled through the streets in panic as medics treated the wounded.

Two cars flattened, bus flipped

At the scene, two cars were flattened and a third was overturned. One bus lay on its side, and another bus was severely damaged.

Injured people sat dazed on the ground amid piles of broken glass and blood stains.

A baby had blood on its face.

The driver of the bulldozer was slumped motionless over the steering wheel.

"I saw the bulldozer smash the car with its shovel. He smashed the guy sitting in the driver's seat,'' said Yaakov Ashkenazi, an 18-year-old seminary student.

Yosef Spielman, who also witnessed the attack, said the bulldozer picked up a car "like a toy''.

People running

"I was shocked. I saw a guy going crazy,'' he said. "All the people were running. They had no chance.''

In a statement, police said a "terrorist'' had carried out the attack.

In March, eight Jewish teenagers were killed in a shooting at a Jerusalem religious school which was claimed by Hamas, the Palestinian militant movement that rules the Gaza Strip.

Peace talks resumed between Israel and the Palestinians in November at a US-hosted conference but have made little tangible progress since, largely over violence in and around the Gaza Strip and continued Jewish settlement building on occupied Palestinian land.

Terror group claims Jerusalem attackFrom correspondents in Jerusalem

A LITTLE-KNOWN group calling itself the Imad Mughnieh unit of the Brigades of the Liberators of the Galilee claimed responsibility for a deadly attack in Jerusalem today in a phone call to AFP.

The same group claimed an attack in March on a Jewish seminary in Jerusalem that killed eight people, which they said was revenge for the killing of senior Lebanese Hezbollah commander Imad Mughnieh in Damascus.

The militia blamed Mughnieh's death on Israel and has vowed revenge.

Israel welcomed Mughnieh's death but denied any responsibility.

In today's attack a Palestinian man from east Jerusalem ploughed an earthmover into a bus and cars in central Jerusalem, killing three people and wounding dozens of others before he was shot dead by Israeli police.
