Peugeot's 206 pugs

My missus is looking at a new car from her old 1L 3cyl charade. She likes the look of the Peoguots alot, like the 206's. Does anyone have any experience with them and know what thinks go wrong with them??

2004 PEUGEOT 206 XT its a black one, 4 door, 1.6 auto(semi) bog stock.
71K on the clock. Meant to have passed major services with no dramas.

Im mechanically sound with services etc, but if anything big happens i may not be able to help.

i have the torture of having to use that when the hilux fails to work. the autos are pretty crappy, better to go manual. and my major gripe with them is the electronic throttle, put foot down, wait a few seconds then revs out then thinks about if it wants to change gears. the auto seems like it has paperwork to sign before its allowed to make a decision.

but as far as faults go, we havent seemed to have any.

mechanically wise. She'll be driving it only around town, not much long distance, And she probably wont notice the auto lag, She drives a 1L !!! I cant stand the charade! So sloooooowwww.

She can only drive an auto..Yet to teach her abit more manual progressly

We live seperate atm and i have my own cars so i wont need to drive it.

well i guess in that case the pugs a good car, a friend has one as well and she hasnt had any trouble with anything in the 2 years or so she has owned it.

There seems to be alot of bad reports on these pugs, but there is good ones too, Seems to be a lucky dip... I really dont want my missus to pick the spack one.

i think the 307 is out of the price range 15k max, Looking for a good 2nd hander. She wants a small car too, the 307 is alittle bigger i think.

do ur self a fovour and stay well away from them especially with high ks, 1 of the boys at work has 1, just over 100k on the clock and needs a new auto they are 5k and there are very few people around that no how to fix them. stick with a corolla.

mmm yeah, the pug is her dream car, more like the 206/306 cc but its out of her leaguethats why she comprimised and wanted a 4door.

Just have to convince her now. Oh well, Poor chickys gonna have to toughen up.

I can definitely recommend them, the other half had one for several years, brilliant little car, especially for the price. Pugs used to get a bad rap for reliability, but the newer ones (especially the 206) seemed much, much better. Having said that dealer services will hurt, so just find a decent local mechanic now that it's out of warranty, there's not that much that needs specialist knowledge.

Re the manual vs auto, only even had the manual, and even for a reasonably gutless girls car it was fun to drive so I'd recommend the manual if you plan to drive it, but if it's the other halfs and she's auto only she won't mind at all.

You'll also love the fuel economy if you drive them sensibly.

Don't be worried about the pug. we have a 307 '04 model that we've had since new and we even extended the warranty for another 3 years. Haven't had any drama's except when the mechanic at ultra tune thought it was a good idea to wash the engine (he spilt some oil while filling it). So apart from needing a new ignition/spark unit that sits on top of the engine, nothing has gone wrong. As said before, the auto's take some getting used to, and if you really need to get going, just use the sports mode (move shifter to the left) Twisted Evil

If you drive a 206/7 you'll find that they are a completely different car. More road noise, less space, weaker panels etc..

Ive owned a 307 manual, and that was a good car to drive. Didnt have it for long as I sold it to finance the 4x4. A friend of mine has a manual 206, and that little thing flies. You cant compare a rolla to a pug, the pug is LUXURY and class, he rolla is an old peoples car, but yes, they are super reliable.

You can get a brand new Suzuki Swift for under 20k. Not sure what your price range is but I just got a 1.5L swift, with cruise control, body kit, fog lights, metallic paint etc for $19,790 (manual of course) Factory said fuel consumption would be 6.3L/100km, I'm managing to get 6.5L/100km and I'm not driving it lightly either.

I test drove an auto, couldn't really put the boot in with the dealer dude sitting next to me, and I gotta say it lagged a bit. The manual absolutely goes though. It drives VERY nicely and even though the boot/hatch looks small, it folds away, has fold down rear seats (just about flat) and is amazingly great for shopping as it has 2 levels. (Meaning you're not jamming it all in the one floor space) Oh, and it fits a stoller no dramas.

just bought the missus a new focus its a 4 speed auto and 2 litre and goes good for a 4 pot. it was 20 000 with under 6000 on the clock and has esp front side and curtin air bags with a fairly big boot for a small car the only thing is its euro so the indicator is on the wrong side

But all these bad comments make me think bad car...Not worth the hassle of a french pug

i work on Peugeot's/Citroen;s everyday, they are not a bad car at all.at 73,000 Km's you will be looking at a major service + timingbelt soon .....due @ 80,000km's
the main issues are the blinker stalks can eventually turn to shit and turn themselves on when going around corners and the auto box electro valves can fail causing the car to hold gears and have rough gear changes,in saying that i only see the ones that have issues.... they are nice to drive though.

someone said above that the gearbox changes when it likes and takes a while or something Rolling Eyes

.....the auto's are an 'autoadaptive' gear box, they adapt to how they are being driven.....so its not the cars fault that the driver canes them, then expects them to shift at cruise straight away.

we may be lookin at a 2006 focus on friday..Looks nice 20k on the clock for Blue, auto, zetec as well. Fords vtec or vvti ?

We'll see what happens..Bit bigger then she wants i think but she has never seen them in person but likes them on net.

If your lucky, but that is all you will fit. When we were looking recently this was one of the biggest failures of the swift. There was just no boot space at all.

I found the manual and Auto swift nice to drive, and yes I put the boot in even with the sales person with me. That is why it is called a Demo Car.

The swift ended up off the list becuase we were looking second hand and it was hard to find a swift in auto second hand. The Mazda 2 we did not like becuase of the location of the child seat anchor hooks in the back.

In the end we settled on the Jazz, still a few things I do not like about it but it is always a compromise when buying a small car that is built to price.

I would have to say that Peugeot have been very reliable to me.

I have had 2 x 307's and 1 x 207, all hdi's (turbo diesels), and could not fault them. I do about 1300kms a week (this is only 60L of diesel) and have never let me down.

Having said that, I think you can buy far better with 15k in the small car market at the moment.

We have just bought a Suzuki swift (downgraded 4x4), and it would represent extremely good value for money. We purchase a 2007 sports model with 9,000kms on it for $17,000. It smells new and is perfect. You do have to act quick as I believe the market is hot with people downsizing. You wont fit a stroller in the back, unless you fold a part of the rear seat forward. With the whole seat folded down we get 2 mountain bikes in!!

it's funny you say that grant. I watched a woman remove the false floor completely and put a stroller in! One improvement that could be done on the swift is for the back seats to slide forward when up right. That's give a lot more space!

I love my swift *sigh*
