High tide tonight

Someone told me that the waves wee crashing over the concrete sea wall at Franga beach... Went down tonight and had a look. The Kannanook creek is very high and there is flotsum 10 feet into the carpark near the boat ramp so it must have surged a lot.

Global warming, dredging or just one of those things, Read that some coastal councils are banning the coastal developments due to the threat of GW.

Prolly a combination of a higher than average tide and the strong, sustained winds over the past day or so?

Yep, just the really strong winds, it's not letting the king tide out basically. Same deal all around the bay, the canals near me were the highest I've seen in a long time.

Roads flood

One of the local "free" carparks around Hobart.

Usually it's about 1-2m above sea level. Right on the waterfront many of the walkers save money by parking down at the local regatta grounds.

A GROUP of Hobart workers got the shock of their lives last night when they found waves crashing over the bonnets of their cars parked on the dock at Huon Quays near the Queens Domain.

The prospect of watching a Barina float away was enough to attract a crowd of onlookers to the dockyards below the Regatta Grounds grandstand.

But while plenty of memories were stored away on mobile phones and digital cameras, the extreme high tide could not budge the line of cars parked on the edge of the dock.

Tracy Williams was upset when she was told of the possible damage to her car.

"It's a high price to pay for free parking," Ms Williams said.

As darkness fell, the last five cars were monitored by police, water surging around their tyres as the tide reached its highest point.

Police called a tow truck but all but one owner had reached the damp vehicles as the truck arrived.

By then the tide had started to recede.

Karen Kean collected her car, the second last on the water's edge.

"It's nice to know someone cares," Ms Kean said as police shepherded the drivers.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Lance Cowled said the tidal event had been caused by the combination of a high tide and a low pressure system sitting over the state.

"The low pressure system amplified the effect of the high tide," Mr Cowled said.

"Usually it would have been a 1.6m tide, but the low pressure system has pushed that up by about 20cm to 1.8m."

Hobart worker Alison Arthur got to her station wagon just before the tide hit its high and said she would park further up on the Domain from now on.

Insp Brett Smith advised owners to hose down their cars, some of which had water inside, and consult bodyworks if concerned.

As wind gusted above 80km/h in Hobart, water was blown across the Midway Point causeway.

yeah same at home.
the water was lapping in the carparks apparently.

been hearing alot about global warming at work.
one report done in aus is suggesting a 1-1.5m rise over the next century.

there is going to be some multi million dollar beach houses going for about $3.50

its noticeable on our aerial photography at work. a photo from 97-98 shows how much land people had on the water, then 2006 photo some people have lost half of their land.

Here on the beautiful Sunshine Coast we've had some of the lowest tides of the year in the last week or so. It's been good for fossicking around the rockpools for critters for our marine tanks. Laughing

high tide brought up an old mine onto ocean grove beach, further examination revealed it to be harmless now

Drove down Oliver's Hill yesterday and yeah the water was still high, very freaky

Hi guys,

All things being equal with monthly tidal fluctuations (higher or lower than normal due to phases of the moon) the major driver of higher or lower tides is the wind.

When you get several days of strong westerlies across Bass Strait the ocean gets squeezed up against the 'barrier' between Wilson's Prom and Tassie, including various islands including Flinders. This raises the sea level west of the Prom, including in Port Philip.

The opposite happens when there strong easterlies east of the Prom.......the water to the west gets blown back somewhat and you get lower tides west of the Prom.
