If they had wet oil on them i would say they were not working at all.

yes the oil was wet.. the engine was relatively warm as i had just got home about an hr ago..

its been taking quite a few goes to get started in the morning these days..

i checked the voltage and the bus bar has about 5v.. after the relay clicks the volts goes to 0v..

i'm checking some online manuals now to see what its suppose to be.

found this on ih8mud..
http://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tech-24-volts-systems/215088-oil-glow-plugs.html?highlight=oil+glow+plugs it refers to the 2h but could offer some food for thought

some points that relate to me:
- there is considerable smoke out of the blow by
- it doesnt consume excessive amounts of oil (im about 1000kms out of a 5000km service and oil is probably 80% of full)
- sometimes smokes bad under heavy load
- injectors are probably about 10,000kms old since being reco'd...

the search for more info continues.. Smile

my 3b was supposedly rebuilt about 70,000kms ago (but no receipts or proof though)

start the engine and take the oil cap off.. if you can sit your oil cap over the hole with out it blowing off its ok.. what color is the smoke aswell.. get someone to start it in the mornings and give it a little rev.. i have no explaination on oil on the glow plugs tho.. unless you have a big crack thats leaking or something i dont no..

I'll give it a try with the oil cap .. thanks for the tip..

it started first go this morning with the fresh glow plugs..

i'm just curious if the oil on the glow plugs is an indication something is not as it should be..

The oil on glow plugs can be caused by oil going down the thread from outside, you then pull them out and cover the tip.. There is no way it will be wet and running ok. You would have a very severe oil consumption problem.

Thanks Andy, this is the kind of info I'm after..

I can confirm however that the top of the block (exterior) had no oil on it which would do what your suggesting. The oil was on the tip (glow part) of the glow plug and not the thread.

I will double check oil levels today and post up.

Hey Jessie,

the parts dude didnt mention if there were different types (voltages) of glow plugs, I just told him it was for the 3b in a Bj42 (no year models mentioned)..

I didnt look too closely at the bosco (or however the brand is spelt - yellow & red box) box to find the voltage info but it wasn't apparent at a glance.

the plugs LOOKED the same when swaping them over though (I realise this doesnt mean much).

I'll take some pix of the plugs tonight and try and chase up a voltage on it..

if it wasnt the correct voltage would it still start first go anyway or would it be a struggle to start?

hi man

new plugs will probably work on both systems for a short amount of time regardless of voltage.

i dont know if it would write the volage on the plug, it may just be a part number you can look up.
