I just watched it on the ABC. What are peoples thoughts on this? Without reducing to political bashing... (like thats going to happen Rolling Eyes Very Happy )

Im all up for the drop on fuel excise and the blocking of the alcopop tax grab. That ones been debated heaps before here though. Also Nelson wants to block some of the means test changes that Labor want to bring in (no rebate or something like that for solar panels if you earn over 100k).

Also interesting to hear they've made $15 billion in cuts to liberal implemented programs but introduced $30 billion on new labor programs. So they rekon there's actually increased spending and taxation to cover that spending and help get the nice big surplus.

So that should get the board rolling.

Let the sh... I mean debate begin Very Happy

*edit* should be "ball rolling" Embarassed

It's actually worth 5.5c - including GST. Laughing

I think that sort of defeats the purpose of the solar panel rebate - it's not to get people cheaper electricity, it's to cut down on CO2 emissions. Rich people can afford to pay for their electricity, so there's no huge incentive to go solar.

Possibly heading OT, but I think services (water/gas/electricity) for domestic users should be on an incremental scale - the more you use, the higher the rate. That way, everybody has some incentive to cut back on what they use.

Making fuel cheaper is not going to help anyone, fuel is a limited resource maybe we should look for alternatives and start to prepair people for the flow on effect this is going to have.

I also thought he would have attacked Rudd more on lack of renewable energy spending.

The speach was more about, this is what we (liberal) left you, we know your history, don't stuff it up.

That's what I thought with the rebate too. I cant see many people earning under 100k who could justify forking out for solar panels. Like you, I thought the whole idea was reduction in emissions, the cheaper electricity was just a bonus.

I got that too. Was a lot of we did this and that good and you guys did this bad way back etc.

5c is barely more than a fuel voucher. Fuel prices are determined by how much petrol companies think they can screw us for, if they drop 5c in excise they will bump 5c up. It'd be swallowed in two seconds flat by the oil companies and the govt would have wasted millions in revenue (which will have to come from elsewhere anyways) in a political gambit that will get attention for about two seconds before it is forgotten.

Personally I think it's Brendan Nelson putting the cards on the table. It shows what a weak hand he has at the minute because the Liberals have always talked themselves on being the economic masters - this makes no sense whatsoever except to garner short-lived favour.

As for the tax on premix (wtf did alcopop come from? I never heard anyone use the term except for today tonight until last month) bin it. I'm all for incentives to make people drink more sensibly, but an ad campaign with boony saying "HTFU and hold your piss, Australia" is a better idea than a stupid tax which just encourages people to buy bottles of spirits.

I heard about the low interest loans for solar/water tanks/wind generators etc and thought that was sweet, untill I saw that it was for under $100,000 income.

I think the sliding scale would be good, I also think they need to bring in tighter regulations on home efficiency when building new homes. Give big incentives to fit grey water systems, solar and to insulate the house sufficiently that air-con isn't needed for more than 5-10% of the year.

The 5c drop on fuel excise is a waste of time as has been said. We need more money put into renewable energy research, especially fuel sources that aren't made from food stocks.

correct, we should be lookin at alternatives, but they arent. So for now, fuel prices dropping will help thousands.

is 5cents a litre going to make much difference.
lets say you used 70 litres a week. thats over $100 worth.
but, you would save $3.50.
big deal.

id prefer to keep the tax and keep building better highways.

People on Min wages are always hurting from something.

Saving 5c a litre on fuel is not going to help them now. As oldgold said it will be eaten up by the fuel companies, they know you will pay it what will anyone do about it. Nothing

Maybe there needs to be a better look at the increasing cap in diesel compared to petrol, sure trucks get a rebate but if this keeps in increasing that is where you will see people hurting, the cost of transport of goods.

Agree. thats why I say 20-30cpl is required. The gov can afford to drop that instantly. 5cpl is some fat cnut in canberra so far out of touch with humanity that it aint funny.

wont happen. majority of users apart from trucks are 4wds, and you can imagine the headlines on today tonight etc if they were seen to be helping 4wds.

Im shocked it already hasnt, specially since trucks still have to buy fuel now and dont get a rebate until end of financial year.

20 - 30cpl will be absorbed in the next year or 2 maybe a bit longer but it will become absorbed. They know we are willing to pay it, and they know there is not many alternatives.

People need to realise that things will have to change, the government needs to step up to the plate #Rofl on this and provide options rather than a band-aid solution that gives jo blow driving a falcon $5 back filling up today but does nothing to help jo blow tomorrow when fuel is $10 more expensive.

As per usual it will be left to the last minute for anything to happen, if at all.

I think your double dutching yourself
- We are willing to pay it - well no we arent - we have no option.
- theres not many alternatives

we have a winner. 30cpl will help people NOW. Theres record amount of houses being repossed by banks and reflogged to the next poor female bits that is strung to the limit.

willionty$ on the last 3 words. I think its time for people to protest. Im against htem so fukin bad, but I dont see any real options.
No Gov people pay for their own fuel, why should they care?
"We know people are hurting" I wanna shoot the next polly that says that.

I use a tank a week (55L) driving to work, it's a 60 kay round trip, I have a six cyl car and I'd say I'm a pretty average commuter.
Say fuel is $1.40pl - which works out at $77 pw.
Let's say govt. excise is whittled by 30 cpl. $1.10pl = $60.50pw

$16pw is not going to save your home, and let' s face it, it'll more than likely be back at $1.40 within 12 months, a grand total saving of $192 - presuming the price remained constant before jumping to $1.40 again.

Which in plain English, is sweet fuck all.

all they are doing if they drop the fuel tax by 5 cents is taking it back to what it was 2 years ago!

GST 10%
GST is the last tax
$1.50 gets 15 cents GST
$1.00 gets 10 cents GST

. doo

I am not an advocate for Krudd by any means, however, I dont believe there is any measure either party can do to elliminate the countries hurt at the present.

I agree that fuel is hurting many families. My wife and I sold our 4wd (a decision not taken easily by me) and replaced it with a diesel sedan. Our fuel bill is $80 week and we do 1200kms, down from $240 week. So, whilst fuel is increasing, there are options for many families.

I think that we need to look at what is putting pressure on our economy. Is it skills shortage, booming resourses, increase govt spending, families being too highly leveraged? i think its a combination of all.

As for the whole rich vs poor debate, at this point in time who really cares. I work in finance and i can assure you, its not the high income families spending the money on consumables...... i see it day in day out. High credit cards, GE interest free loans, of which 90% is spent on crap. The baby bonus is a classic example, i have seen hundreds of bank statements where the bonus is paid, and following is a month of spending.

I think GST should be 15%. Fuel, food, rates and electricity should be GST free. The tax free threshold should be 20k, and then flat rate of 30% thereafter.

Just my 2 cents.

Oh, and i watched Dr Nelsons speech, there was some funny stuff in it, I found it enjoyable to watch, pity half of the labour party were talking through it.....

before increasing one, just get rid of the others, then increase it, cause otherwise the other taxes will never be removed

I liked the concept of a "Transaction Tax" - everytime money is transferred/exchanged/changes hands, a flat 2% (or similar) goes to the government. No exceptions, no exemptions, no rebates.

Implementation could be a little tricky...
