MTZ - width on a std GU steel rim ? 265\75\16 &285\75\16

I am looking at a set of these and need to know the overall width on the rim, to see if the spare will still fit under my tray (tight fit with an AT).
Can anybody help please ?
The tyre shop could only estimate it without fitting to a rim..

What do you mean by width?

A 285 is about 33", but it depends on the brand and the model. It wouldn't surprise me if it's anywhere from 32.5" to 33.5".

or do you mean the 75 part?

Pretty sure he wants to know the exact width of the tyre fitted to whatever width rims the patrol has.

Perhaps you could specify the rim width and post in the general section to get an answer?

I guess the tyre shop told you it would be around 285mm.

If it helps (which it doesnt really) my new silverstone 285 85 16's on a 8" rim measure exactly 285mm. I have the feeling that not all tyres are exactly what the carcass says though, hence your enquiry....

Tom0, 285 is the width of the tyre (not the diameter), I have 285s and they measure 35.5"! However you are correct if you mean the 285/75 is around 33"

the issue is every brand of tire, and model are different..
MTR/BFG/Coopers/MT 285x75's will all be different. It really is just an 'estimate' for want of a better term.

TRUE! I didn't even realise this until I just looked it up then.

285 - Section width in millimetres
70 - Aspect Ratio
R - Radial Construction
16 - Rim Diameter in inches

Aspect ratio refers to the ratio between the tyres width and its side wall height. That is, a 285/70/R16 size tyre has a 70% aspect ratio which means its side wall height is 70% of its width which is 285mm. Note that this is a ratio, not an absolute measurement so a 285/70 has a different side wall height measurement to a 275/70 even though the ratio is the same. The 16 refers to the wheel size in inches.

So, for a 285/70/r16
285 x 0.7 (70%) = height of rubber over the rim
x 2 = total height of rubber above and below rim, still in mm...
/ 25.4 (mm in an inch)
+ 16 (your rim, which is 16" here)
= total height!!
= 31.7" in this example

Examples 255/85R16 = 35", 275/70r17 = 33"

But the 255 is 20mm narrower than the 275 above. (BTW those examples are Coopers)
