These 2.8's have a fuel pump fault, the alloy material is very soft and prone to wear, they wear out on the advance piston in the fuel pump, this affects the timing control and causes the pump to inject fuel at the wrong spot, as you crank it for a while it builds up pressure and the advance piston starts to move to the correct spot and allows a start to occur.
Sorry but the repair is a new fuel pump housing and commonly a pump rebuild. Cheers Phill

There is a replacement pump cover avilable from nissan that moves the shuttle valve into the housing, sorry don't have the part No. off hand. Do a search on the Patrol forum and it'll cost somewher @ $50 to fix.

What was just mentioned about the advance piston plate is correct, but its a tempory measure, you are curing the effect and not the cause. The cause as mentioned is in the injector pump.

Time to make a decision.

I had the exact same problems with my GU 4.2TD only a week ago. Nissan found that a brush in the starter motor had seized thus it would still crank the engine over, but would draw a fair bit more current thus dropping battery voltage low playing havoc with electronics. They also said with the heat of the engine and expansion was enough from one brush to brake contact plus it being seized.
I hope this helps.

my 2.8 done that so got the repair kit from nissan about $120 lasted for about 5000km then went back to shit so i'm putting a new motor in as the fuel pumps are about 6k.
One way i use to start it a bit easier was to turn the key just past the accesories and hold it there for about 10 seconds then put the pedal down about an inch and turn the key the rest of the way that was the only way it would start with out waiting 20min.

hey bud
did you end up finding the cause of th e hot start problem??? i beleave its to do with the EGR controller (exhaust gas controller) which also controls the second heat or the "quick heat " with the 2.8 glow plugs .. the plugs test ok so everyone seems to think its fuel... had the fuel injector pump rebuilt $1850 later and after a couple of days same thing luckly the pump was leaking anyway and still needed rebuild .. have been studying the gregory's( more than i ever did when i was ment to) book #512 and it tells you all about the EGR and how it works so im now looking for a new controller hopefully will have the problem solved soon .. if you have since fix you 'r start problem and think im heading in the wrong direction please advise ASAP thanks ADma
