Water pump does not have backing plate on the 6G72.

Yes timing belt must come off to access water pump. I've used power max pumps from burson twice with good results. P/N W3114

I Think when they are talking about the backing plate they mean the houseing but before deciding weather or not getting the backing plate take out the whole pump ass. and inspect the rear were the pipe goes in and look to see that the lip inside is not broken causing leak. unfortunatly I never fixed this problem with my first blown head gasket causing it to eventualy start leaking again and now im off the road with another blown gasket i am not going to make the same mistake twice besides it is to much of a mission getting to the water pump again to fix it.

Winger correct.

There are two options The front part or the complete pump.

While your doing the pump, replace the oil seals, and timing belt.

My NF water pump siezed and cooked the timimg belt, luckly the g72 NF motor is non - interferance.

Went for the whole pump (aisin) repco gave to me for $229 retail they r $330 the old pump was pitted on the rear allthough leaking from the pulley replaced the oil seal but not the timing belt (no more cash) all stripped down and clean ready to go back together today. spent 4 hrs pulling it down BL@@dy things give me a HOLDEN RED motor could have done the whole job in 4 hrs. Sore chest from leaning in the engine bay

I could have bought the "front" half alone but concidering the pitting in the backing plate decided on the "whole" option

put your air con pump back on but rig up an airline fitting, they make wicked tyre pumps had mine doing this duty for a few years now. once used it to get a mate from panawonica to tom price after he blew both spares, pump up tyre every 15 mins. lol.
