would there be much differance in the strengh of the gearing??
i would imagine the differanec would be that with 4.88's you would be running bigger tyres, and even though the ratios would work out the large tyres would obviosly put more strain on the diffs!

I believe it's a 4.56 ratio (not 4.55) even I know that and I drive a POS shopping trolley
I think when you get down to the 5.29 ratio is when the pinion gear is getting on the thin side. |

i just fitted 4:88 to the 80 matched with double air lockers,
i had a prob with the rear not being shimmed right and it turned out that the gears were cut badly (from italy apparently) so it has been back in the workshop for the last two weeks waiting on a new set from the states.
i only drove it for 2 days when i first picked it up and it was awsome on the road, (maybe a little high reving on the freeway) and thats running 35's but may look at a 36 or 37 and i think that should bring the revs down a fraction.
cant wait to see how it performs offroad. |

No higher ratio is weaker, ie. more prone to break because tooth load is greater at same input torque.
Here I am saying that 1:4.88 is higher ratio (lower geared) than 1:4.56 (perhaps you understand it differently). |
