hi all, im embarking on a SAS project. ive got a 93 jtop 3ltr v6. had it for about 4 years now. got it standard. first i did a ball joint flip and wound up the torsions, then added 33s, then springs in the rear. removed swaybars and rear bumper. brought a written off diesel and got the 5.285 diffs and arear locker from it and a few odds and sodds. also did a 2"body lift to borrow a friends 35s for a trip. now i was fed up with idler arms giving up and my front bushes were worn out so after seeing jtops, hes local to me, and another he did, and franks on here i was sold.
so found a front diif out of a competition 4x4 local to me that already had the pumpkin swaped, and custom strengthened axles and cvs (hilux centre and 70series crusier hubs/outers) for a good price so grabed it.
now i had some trailing arms off the paj i wrecked so im going to use them for the radius arms, and do a 3 link(?).
have already choped out the front suspension, and geting close to making up the mounts.
where it all started.
the housing as i got it.
kinda in place, with some safari front springs, but they are looking to big so will be looking into others.
now a question i have been wondering, why does everyone remove/move that bar that goes between the chassis rails with the powersteer pipe(?) on it?
any advise or thoughts greatly recieved.

HI Sam,
Good to see you here. From what i understand and looking at mine - do you mean that welded in crossmember tube?
If so then it is taken out to get an extra couple of inches clearance. You can see it hangs down a bit.
Wecome by the way. Make sure you keep the pic's coming... |

bit of an update.
i have choped the cross member out of the front and the radius arm mount boxes have been tacked in place on the chassis. last night we bolted up the radius arms in properly and set the diff up were it needs to go but i didnt get photos yet.
it has also been decided that i cant use the standard pajero steering box so i will have to go toyota like the other SASs i have seen. trying to find a prado (bundy over in oz i think) box for a decent price at the moment.

All that work and only using a 3-link? Don't get me wrong, I mean anything is better than the IFS setup, but I can't justify the fact that if your going to SAS - why not go the full haul.
Cheers,

Its easy to set up, im helping wacko with this and its the first SAS we have done. Long term plan is to extend the wheel base and fit an a-frame in the rear. The 3 link will have better road going manners as well. |

worked out the front driveshaft last night. measured up to get the existing one shortened, worked out to be about 30mm to long...
then remembered that when i put the diesel diffs in i had to use the diesel d/shaft as it was a bit longer. so shot home and got the old petrol one...
it fitted perfect!!!! all i had to do was redrill the pinion flange bolt holes and it should all bolt up.. good if i damage one too.std is easy.

it now can sit on the suspensin but we havent done the panhard yet so its still not left for long. also had a bit of trouble with the coilover hoops, as they were hitting the prado steering box so we had to notch a bit of the drivers side hoop and also ended up completely modifing them after we thought they were done. but they too now are sorted.
tomorro we do the pan hard and hope to finish mounting the steering box, if time allows.
a pic of the coilovers we are using
can kinda see the notched bit
sitting with weight on the coilovers

almost done! amazing what a real deadline will do for your motivation!
sun we did the panhard mount and welded the shock hoops in properly and put in the second crossmember. also sorted the length of the panhard which is a shortened gq safari front panhad. that still has to be made into an adjustable, but its fine for now.
today (mon), we did the steering box mount box with crush tubes and checked the diff housing didnt warp with all the welding. its all looking good so partially assembled.
pics,
all left to do is adatapt the steering shaft to the PS box, trying at the moment to use the toy uni joint and put it in the paj shaft. looking promising so far. that should be done tue night, then do the p/s fluid lines, hope they wont cause to many problems and the break lines too, but may wait till its home to finish them. will be doing the ifs hub conversion at home too i think.
but its all coming together nicely!!!!
BIG UPS TO DODDZEE!!!
Sam
oh and do the steering stops... |

got the steering shaft in tonight. used the prado bit that attaches to the steering box as the prado has a bigger spline than the pajero. used the cross from the prado uni joint (left it in the prado part) and put it into the pajero shaft bit, with pajero roller bearings. took a few times to get the rollers in correctly but after about 2hrs of pissing around it all went together.
hope that makes sence to someone. im not sure of the actual names of the bits.

well its rolling and home. still have to do the wide axle conversion, break lines and steering lines and tierods. was a bit unnerving driving it on and off the trailer with no breaks or steering!
a bit higher than the neighbours paj....
and the flatemates terrano...
have decided i want to take out the bodylift now also. drop it down a bit.
