As the topic says i wanna see some pics and specs of boats that you guys may own. I'm thinkin of getting into it as i have a few mates with ski/fishing boats or jet ski's and i've been enjoying getting onto the water.
Thinking of spending between 4 and 5 grand, the three attached pics are all from the trading post and can be had for 5 grand or under.
So post up ! |

Yeah, I race sail boats but!! Go the rag power....
I've got a Hobie 16 that i'm training on at the moment for the World Titles being held in Mexico next May.
I've raced skiffs too.
(Bet one of these two types of boats could possibly go faster than those power boats too, given the correct wind and sh1t!) Just a bit of friendly comp'
I'll post a picture soon.
Cheers |

I Lived on a pittwater water front house for the 1st 21 years of my life Grew up in boats...
My 1st was a dingy with a 2hp engine. Then I got a 11"6' tiny with a worked 8hp (faster than most 15hp's hehe).
In that time my parents started with a 16" small yacht, then a caribean jaguar ski boat with 115hp that could lap scotland island in 1.5 minutes flat , then a 26" Cruiser, than a bertram 25" then a bertram 20".
For the money your looking at you need to work out exactly what you want to do...you can get a general runabout with as big as engine as possible for towing and possibly set it up for fishing. Anything with a 1/2 cabin is recommended if you want to stay overnight with some sort of comfort. If going the sail way, hobie cats are a whole bottle of fun... |

My cousins always had boats they lived on the water
We had a 2000 Model 35HP Johnson (3cyl) on a 10foot stessel (tinny).
0-60 in about 1 second top speed was around 75-80clicks, depending on the condition in the broadwater |

Got a 19 fraser footer with 115 brown band " block of flats"merc.
Try and stay clear of old outboards eg older than 8 years, they are designed to run on leaded, with lrp you got to run pulp,go bigger jets and advance the timing. $$$$$$$ day out on the water.
If they bugger up like ours did then you're up for big$$$, we detonated 3 pots due to shit lrp fuel, cost for rebuild including tilt/trim unit which also decided to feck up at the same time $3000 and we got out of it cheap as the robbing asshole outboard rip off repair agents try to slug us $2000 for a 2nd hand trim unit ( got our for $600 recon at the wreckers).
Unless youre a outboard mechanic or know one then be warned. Parts for these things are over the top.
Try and go for a petrol (pref v8) if you wanna ski and make sure that its got a bilge blower and a non leaky fuel system otherwise youre on a flaoting bomb. The fuel vapours sink to the bilge, spark then boom.
Buy yourself a small tiiny with a newish motor, try it out and if find that you dont use it then you can sell it and hopefully not loose too much$$ but remember the saying " owning a boat is like standing in a cold shower tearing up $100 bills" and how true it is.
I've gone halves with a mate and it still costs heaps for the amount of time we use it. |

jeremy are u still looking for a boat?
just like a 4by u gotta decide what u want it 4, skiing, fishing? cruising? going to the beach... for your first boat look for something reasonably stable. the deeper V shape will help it cut thru the water/wash better and is USUALLY more stable. if u r wanting to be able to beach it often, go for an outboard, like those 3. if u dont care and want a ski boat there are heaps of boats round the 5000 mark with 308's? and even 350/351's in them. parts for inboards are cheaper, but check for corrosion. on our 350 the starter motor is bottom right, one of the lowest parts of the engine, and the first to get wet if u get water in the boat, which isnt good, especially if its salt. make sure u test drive it and get some mates along to see how it goes with some load in it. an outboard of about 130hp+ will normall be more than adequate to lug the boat around and pull a skier or too, depends how much beer u take! steering cables on boats tend to be really expensive too so check it out to make sure it is good nick.
most of the smaller boats wont have breaks on the trailers, but if they do, make sure they are in good nick or they will cause u problems.
dont get sucked into a really really fast boat, cos u wont ever use it that fast and it will be unstable and wont hold many people. and the water will never be flat enuf. the malibu scares me at barefooting speeds (50 - 60 MPH) but it is a hell of a lot of fun.
good luck,
Ben

Chad & I built a 25ft trailable yacht under our house. I have tried to post some pics of it but no go! Anyway, if you must have a stinky remember, 6 knots or no wash withing 30 metres of an anchored vessel. There's nothing worse than sitting on deck, relaxing with a good drink then spilling the drink all over youself because some w*nker in a power boat has no idea. Or thinks that slowing down to 6 knots right beside you is good enough. Gives me water-rage! |

For the price range you are looking at for a ski boat a v8 inboard is probably the safest option - from the point of view that you can repair/replace the engine if you need to.
Old outboards can cost big $$. Especially if you rebuild them and they lunch themselves after two uses.
I would go for something mid mounted because V drives can be expensive if the stuff up and unless you are a gun skiier you probably won't notice the difference in wake between a mid mount and a v drive
Go for something with a dog clutch instead of a soft clutch. Less to go wrong as you will be looking at something with a couple of years on it and soft clutches can cause probs if they have sat for a while.
Boats can be money pits but they can be also lot of fun for the whole family. |
