Unimog U1700 - Project Time

Some of you that atended Tuff Truck this year may have seen us with our 416 Unimog, well not thats complete we have a new project underway..a U1700L

We finished packing up a U1700L (or what was left of it) ready for Transportation from Queensland down to the Shop in Sydney.

Its a shame that the previous owner stripped it, threw away the cab and tray and left it in the state it is in forthe last two years.

We need to get it to Sydney so that we can put a cab on it and get it registered.

One little tidbit of Info that i like about this truck..There are two auxiliary gearboxes available, which allow for high, low and super low. High is 1:1, low is 5.76:1 and super low is 55.87:1 giving crawl ratios lower than 4500:1 Now thats a Crawler Ratio!! Twisted Evil

Some may wonder if we are crazy or bitten off more than we can chew but we like a challenge.

So as you can see we definately have a lot of work to do before its back on the road.

As you can see it has no cab or tray, but luckily pretty much everything else is there including Dash and interior items. The box on the back is the crate we built up on it to hold the parts ready for transport.

This one has the Factory RHD conversion.

We actually got the full Mercedes Workshop Service Manuals with it so that will be a big help. .

The turning radius is 14.1 meters (not much worse than my Patrol really Laughing

Well the mog made it to Sydney and was offloaded in the street. So last night we had to move it from the street to the shed..which while it looked like a tough job turned out to be easy..

Sadly though..the mog has now been towed by a patrol, winched by a toyota and dragged by a hummer Laughing

Well we definately have a cab for it now..I think that the cab has had a longer history than the truck though and needs a lot of TLC

The doors need some work to get rid of the rust, but they are a pretty simple design so it should not be to hard to fixed that up (we hope)

we got a price on a new cab for it and the cab alone is in the vicinity of $65000.00, so we can afford to spend some money tidying this one up Wink

The first parts are coming back from Cleanup and paint.

These are the rear sway bar links, the beer can is to give you an idea of the size..

The shear size if everything is hard to comprehend and not something we are used to dealing with

Is that DoKa cab currently in the UK?

We have a 1300 here at work but the cab has been butchered into a walk through and it's pretty rusty.

I have had that for ages..it was made years ago buy a company in South Australia until they got sued by the simpsons and had to recall it all..I was working at a pub at the time so we all took a few cans and drank the rest Wink

Well the weather has held us up getting the chassis cleaned up and painted, so it been a slow last week or so.

In the mean time the Rear Calipers and some more sway bar links have been cleaned up and cluttering the lounge room Laughing

Gear Indicator lights cleaned up and the numbers repainted

Cleaning up the Rear Brake Calipers (the large unit on top of the caliper in this image is the linkage for the Dead-Man brake. It is coated in a rust convertor/sealant which dries clear.

Calipers back together (well one side complete) And again the Duff to give you a size comparison

It's one of those things, "If you have to ask it'll be too much".

You're lucky to find a dual cab, Back when I was in the Army they only had a couple of Dualcabs, all at Pucka.

In all my time in the army I never saw one of those things bogged.

Every time I have seen/been in a Mog it has ended up stuck. - I've seen about 4 of them in strife.

We used them to support the school Cadet Corps, and the Army used to go to the Wandin Field day here in Vic and drive the test track in them.

They seem to have funny ground pressure- they fall off of even slight cambers once the surface is slick, and if the ground is soft they REALLY sink. Because of the portals, they can sink past the radius of the tyre when they sit on their diffs so they are really hard to recover.

Not bagging Mogs really, It is also a combination of poor tyres, driver skill, tyre pressure etc, but they are far from unstoppable, and can get stopped by stuff that a stock landcruiser etc would drive up and down all day.

With the right tyres, tyre pressure and driver, I'm sure they will do very well.

Just my 2c.

Yes you are quite right, the Mogs used in the Australian army tend to get stuck a fair bit. The main reason for this is pretty much because of the tyres. For soem reason they run standard AT type tyres on them, which are not even the original fitment on the mogs.

It also comes down to the driver as well..in many ways you let the mog find its own way through difficult sections rather than trying to 'Drive'it through

I would put money on either the 1700 or my 404 going places that you would not be able to take even a modified vehicle through let alone a stock vehicle

have a look at this video and tell me that a stock cruiser would make it..lol

Admittably the mog had a hard time, but then most 4x4's would let alone one with a crane etc on the back./
