L - 2.2L
2L - 2.4L
3L - 2.8L
5L - 3L
My preference would be a MK1 (pre 86 and earlier) 2L with turbo added, i have spoken to many diesel workshops and they say the same. I have driven 3L powered hiluxes and i have experienced along with some others that the 2L is a higher revving motor compared with the 3L
the 5L has heaps of power but heard a lot with problems with the heads on these motors, but have no first hand experience |

Are all the hilux diesel moters interchangable?
Like will a 5L bolt straight up where a 3L or 2L came out?
Just curious
Paul. |

can;t say for a 5 L, L through to 3L have the same engine mounts, get the right bell housing and it will drop in.
i do not how ever know wether a L bell housing bolts on to a g52 or wether the bolts holes are the same between a L, 2L/3L
how ever, in my 1985 4 Runner with 2L, i am using a 3L bell housing, this will enable you to run a slightly larger diameter clutch, it bolts up besides the two most bottom holes, which come off two picks (cast things which bolt on to the side of the block). i never did it but i was going to try and get these cast things off a 3L block and try them on my 2L
did this help or are you confused |

had a 3L cracked the head at 200,000
got a 5L now with 200,000 on it, no issues with the motor, still runs strong, the rest of the car is disintegrating around the strong motor, it is a 1997 model and has seen a LOT of hard work, and hard beach. |

Ive got a 3L with 210000 on the clock and it still runs great, its as gutless as the day it left the factory .
I was thinking about a turbo and intercooler to give it a bit more poke but if a 5L fits straight in I might look at finding a secondhand one and turboing that.

My local diesel mechanic man said the same thing. I spoke about turbos and he would rather a 2LT then a 3LT |

Filled 2 cylinders on my 98 lux with water, had to pull the injectors to blow the water out. After that she started up, changed the oil, had it checked by my greaser mate and she is still running fine. As far as I'm concerned Toyo diesels are the way to go. If only I had turbo'd it when i had the cash. |

Heard some good stories about 2L motors:
...dropped a timing belt on the freeway, full speed, new belt, keep going...
...hydraulicked the motor at about 6,000rpm, blow out gunk, change oil, keep going...
If you knew the previous owner of this motor this would not surprise you...
I now own the rig with this same motor, I had it rebuilt recently, my motor rebuilder checked everything, all components were still within spec...go Toy... |

Who said anything about blowing the gunk out and then changing the oil. I just kept hitting the key till it started and it prob still had the same oil in it when you bought it from the guy i sold it too |

That guy told me that the frothy stuff was just a really high detergent oil - and it lubricated better than the inferior honey coloured, or better still, the oil that looks like runny vegemite...
I kid you not Ruff, I found a gold nugget in that truck when I was stripping it down. The guy I bought it off told me that he lost a nugget in it when he was prospecting in the fields down south, I thought, yeah sure mate...
Seriously, I think a lot of the problems people have with cracked heads in the L series is due to lack of maintenance, in regards to the cooling system. Keep the cooling system clean with fresh rust inhibitor, and it should give you good service. |
