Hi jeep ppl

My dad has had a mid 90s model cherokee for about a year now and has had dramas with it.....its needed new wheel bearings, exhaust and manifold, the rear pinion bearings have just been replaced but this arvo the mechanics have dicscovered the front diff is also making a bad noise...
It has done 150 000kms...he seems to think the speedo has been tampered with??
Are these problems normal for this number of kms?

Cheers

Hey Camskizook,

Cherokee problems like this are proportional to the abount of abuse it has had

Has your old man had this since new ? any lockers or ratio changes ? bigger tyres lift etc ? these will all reduce the life of the bearings if not done right

I would get it checked over by some one who knows jeeps like Suburban in Sydney or Hammonds in QLD or USA 4x4 in Melb

He bought it second hand.....it is as stock as rock and he only drives it work...its running 235/75 all terrain tyre. Which makes me think that the previous owner may have flogged it coz my old boy is not much of a rev head...hehe

Cam,

being a used XJ - who the heck knows what the previous owner has done - could have run partime 4x4 onroad for allwe know......Some folk get confused between fulltime & partime on the XJ box Rolling Eyes ....
Also you might find that the previous owners done a bit of mudding and never replaced the oil.....or just never replaced it....
Just too many unknowns.
But the XJ, like any other rig properly serviced should be a reliable rig......

I would get it checked out by a jeep specialist as these problems may just be a symptom of another problem

Rolling Eyes

It is really hard to say as 150K by one driver is nothing like 150K from another driver

some friends of mine have had a few cherokees .... they're pretty tame drivers don't go off road much ... once a blue moon maybe ....
and they've had major troubles with the diffs and wheel bearings

its starting to sound like a common occurance ...

My Cherokee has now done 103K and has performed perfectly every millimetre of the distance, I did have to replace a front wheel bearing but other then that, no problems...my opinion is that The Jeep Cherokee is much the same as any other 4bee, follow the service book to the letter and you will get good service. The Cherokee is designed to take you beyond the end of the road, it will do this, in stock standard form, as good as, and better then most, other 4bee's on the road.
When purchasing a used car, any car, a lot of care has to be taken, better to have a used Jeep then no Jeep at all!!

I mate had to replace his front wheel bearings at around 100K, other than that, she's been sweet her whole life.

Dumb bastard just swapped it for an Exploder (not really his fault, company car).

Not to compare Magna's to Jeeps, but my mum's magna suffered a breakdown on monday with 3 cracks in the head and a VERY tired auto box which was caused by the previous owner. The magna is a 1992 model which was bought in 1994 by my mum and has run perfectly until now. The previous owner had thrashed the car in it's first 2 years and the effects are now starting to show as the car ages. It has less than 90,000klm on it and it's 11 years old. I am pushing for a new renegade Cherokee to replace the magna but i don't think she'll go for it... Crying or Very sad

Previous history is usually the decider when it comes to several parts failing on an ageing car which has been religiously serviced.

I reckon an XJ is a pretty decent rig. There are always some lemons out there but most i know have been solid performers. I have even thought about selling my TJ for one. Bit more practical etc. But now i have just spent $3000 on SYE and Suspension bits i am not gonna sell it for a long time.

I have thought about going to a larger 4wd for practicality and camping puposes but the TJ is just so much fun.

the pinion bearings are comon thing to go in the jeeps my mums we have had since new use to be mu old mans and has been through my brother and i on p plates and thrashed to the bull shit and it keeps on going with only the bearings going we have had no problems with it. I wouldnt want to buy our one in a few years time though as it is frequently sideways on the road ripping up the limited slip
