2F Oil Consumption

i got a 2F in my 60 and it guzzles oil like its goin out of fashion
i dunno if it is just usin it or if its burning it all up
has anyone ever had this prob b4
ive owned it for bout 12 months and i reckon its used 70+ litres of oil
i replaced rear main 2 months ago and it needs replacing again now
gearbox is pissin oil out all the time
t/case is leakin
has anyone come across a fix for this

Bundytunna how come the rear oil seal needs replacing so soon? It should last for years.
Are you sure it s not the sump gasket all along ?
Is the engine fuming ?if so its a good indicator that your rings are worn.
You can try additives but personally I think you would be throwing good money after bad and best to cut your losses and look around for a low klm or rebuilt engine.
The same with the gearbox and t/case if you want to stop the leaks although the additives will probably work better there.
Try Bardahl brand I think they are the best.

when the rear main was replaced, was the crankshaft grooved/worn? if it was, a new seal will leak very quickly unless the shaft is sleeved. same goes for the transfer seals, if the shafts are grooved, or if the output shaft bearings have any play, they will leak even with new seals. the only real solution is a rebuild, which is expensive. for the motor to burn that much oil it would have other problems, it would be going through spark plugs and would run like crap. there are dozens of places on the 2F that can leak unforunately, but they are not usually big leakers. give it a good degrease/pressure clean at carlovers, then run it and watch it, see where the oil is coming from. it could be something simple and cheap like the oil pressure sender or a side cover.

what you really need to do is ditch that 2F and get a 1HZ in there ;)

I'm assuming the 1HZ is the 4.5L twin cam EFI? Will that bolt straight in to replace a 3F? I'm burning a ton of oil with the 3F cos the rings are gone so I figure the 4.5EFI is the best way to go.

the crankshaft is shot but i dont have enuf dosh to replace it so ill just let the fargin thing leak
its not the sump gasket coz i replaced that too
if it keeps leaking bad im thinking of goin to V8 either 350 or Holden
coz it will cost about the same as putting in a new crankshaft so might as well and put the 350 in coz it will get the same fuel consumption as the 2f if not better
and it will get plenty more torque etc

Bundytunna Id check on the fuel consumption with a 350.They only get 18-19 mpg on a exceptional day in a HJ holden ect.So if you add another 700kg of landcruiser,a lower geared box and worse aerodynamics I reckon you will be getting 12-13mpg. The price of a conversion will cost at least 5 grand .You can get a remanufactured engine (3F)that fits straight in for $2300 with a 12 month warranty. You always get a better resale value with an original motor, less headaches
Another optiion is to look for a good 2nd hand motor.Seems to be quite a few around with people doing those 6.2 chev diesel and 350 conversions

how 'shot' is the crankshaft? if you mean it's grooved at the rear main seal spigot, it can be repaired with a speedisleeve for about $50, plus the cost of dropping the gearbox to get at it.

you can rebuild your 2F for under a grand, unless it has 300,000+km it's unlikely to need a rebore/pistons, a set or rings, seals, bearings and gaskets will see it right for a few years. it's not a difficult motor to work on, except heavy. 2F also responds well to camming, headers, electronic ignition, and alternative carburetion, if you want to throw money at it.

also re fuel economy, you can do as well as 14l/100km in a 60 series on the highway keeping the speed down to 80 - 90 (assuming <2" suspension and 31" or 7.50/16" tyres), and even around town I used to get under 16l/100km in the FJ40 just by driving it grandma style (but if I has spare cash I'd thrash it and it woudl gobble 24+ Smile

Dunno if your interested or not but if you want a cheap rebuild, I've got a complete 2F bottom end with a full big and small end bearing kit (brand new) ready to go in you can have for $100 the lot. Let me know.

my 60 has 340k on the clock and runs 31's soon to be 33's plus it has a 4 inch lift
i get prob about 120k's on a tank of gas
im not interested in rebuilding the 2f coz in my opinion the engines are a heap of shit very underpowered
ill just wait till she blows then ill slip in a 350
