I'd read a bit about these but actually saw one for sale out my way recently, FUGGIN TANK!!!!!! Shocked
Anyone remember a review in a mag a while back of a big red G Wagen in OZ, I can't find it Confused It said parts were easy and cheap to get for them.

I post this cause I saw a SWB G Wagen rollin past work yesterday, looked cool. Hell SWB/ turbo diesel/ factory diff locks f & r/ live axles w coils = I want one!

Girlfriend has a one from the mid 90's.

Parts are an absolute pitta and most stuff has to be sent over from germany.

Great vehicle though.

i grew up in South Africa and they are super popular there. Parts are also easy to find when Mercedes have a factory there. Great, super tough (for stock) powerful truck.
They are almost as comfy as Rangies...... Wink

Go take a look at the new ones...they have all the trimmings, and more, that a high spec Mercedes road car does BUT has rigid axles, coils springs, ETC as well as centre, rear and front manual difflocks.....
Shocked Shocked

Stuff from the factory of nissan\yota or merc is about the same .. but you can fins spare parts for the nissan or yota in a wreckers .. most of the merc stuff you have to get new from mercedes ... how about $1900 for a new spindle and CV ... fot the same you could get a second hand housing for a Patrol or Crusier with a locker ..

I saw an old beaten up 1984 one the other day - a 240GD. It was a pretty impressive truck, and only cost him e650 (just over $1000AUD). They have diffs that look similar to D44's and radius arm suspension front and rear (like 2 sets of Range Rover front radius arms).

So what are they like on steep climbs - I had heard that there are disadvantages with radius arms on the rear??? Too much antisquat when climbing or something.

Ben, I think "GwagonSteve" who visits some of the other forums would be well qualified to answer those question. I have heard a great deal about his truck and from all reports it is highly capable. The series 2 Disco's have gone over to that type of rear end too, so there may be some advantages to it, but wheel travel is not one of them.

FYI, G-wagons been winning and competing in European and other comps for years. They been winning a fair share of them and almost always do well.

It is a rock solid truck that is very well built. IMHO you can't go wrong with one other than priccy parts. I have seen them fitted with Mog portals and let me say it is very impressive.

BTW, I was wrong, G-wagons only go up to about 375hp. Rolling Eyes

I have been running mine since 1997. There are some issues with the car picking up front wheels, but this really only tends to be in situations where most other cars are misbehaving quite badly too. It does "jack" a fair bit under "power" (stock OM617 diesel), but this is lessened in 4WD. I think that while you are in europe, a G would make an interesting toy. I would suggest that you might be better trying to find something with a bit bigger engine though, as IMHO the 300GD is pretty maginal and the 240GD is a fair bit less powerful. I believe that the 280GE (6 cylinder petrol) is probably the pick of the bunch, with the 4speed auto. These are mechanically injected and are quite quick considering the age/weight and would have enough revs to run the deeper available diff gears ( mine is 4.88, runs 3150RPM@ 100kph with 35.5" tyres) there are 5.3's and 6.1's available.

Mine has been very reliable considering the use and age. (85) I think that with a source of 2nd hand parts in europe, it would not be too hard to keep one running cheaply.

280GE. pffft!

The 300GE is fast. 4th gear (auto) only kicks in at about 160km/h though.
