by a real 4by you must mean a cruiser, they can be turned into cruisers by swapping all the cruiser running gear over >_<

as for cost, how longs a chinaman.

depends on how far you want to go, skys the limit.
have a look through the froums, go through a few tracks
and see what will suit, rather than spending heaps on acc, you find u dont need or use, also while a v8 has a dump load of hairy ones, a well tuned, reliable orignal motor has my vote... thats what i recon any way.

the hilux running gear is strong enough

the steering is often upgraded to crossover to get the linkages up over the diff and out of the way of rocks

you can put crawler gears in the transfer case for a lower crawl ratio, or dual transfer case for a super low crawl ratio.

a lift is probably likely, and for lifts there are a million options you can take, some people get leaf springs from a Hilux with IFS and mount them on the front end of thier live axle hilux, this gives more travel, or you can go a custom spring setup, or an off the shelf lift kit (2")

fitting a V8 would be good, but as mechtech said, you will then have a non standard rig and reliability is in your hands then. If you stick with toyota running gear at least you can get parts quick. There are upgrades for almost everything on a hilux available off the shelf.

You can go the extreme route and fit 60 series diffs under it, for increased wheel track and strength, which for a V8 would be a good move, but if you stick with the stock hiolux power plant your unlikely to break axles etc (unless you have big tyres)

Well I figure I speak for him as I will be the one doing a bit of the work.

Lets say 36 tsl’s. Will a 5.1:1 be suitable on road or will it still need R&P gears like 5.29’s?

Also say 2 inch body and 2” suspension, I would image this is enough room with a bit of creative hammering. Will their be issues with firewall rubbage?

I guess the motor will be a carb R22 or are these injected?

An 84 petrol should be a 3Y (2 litre). I had a 3Y and I would never have tried to run 36s on road with it. And you mention 5.1 as if thats what its got now. Standard it should have been 4.88s. Either way most people say that once you go above the 4.88s your gonna get diff strength issues. Doubt you'll fit 36s without rubbing the firewall too. Tub the firewall or move the diff forward.

Sorry I meant 5.1 crawlers in the Tcase. I see what your saying about the diff gears but recently I brought that subject up in the zook section and got a serving that 5.29’s were strong enough. And it would seem so looking at rig’s like gonads who runs 46 claws.

Yeah I'm just stating what I've read. I imagine zooks (especially buggy zookz) are a fair bit lighter than a lux. The damage usually occurs when the vehicle bounces, the wheels spin and come to a sudden stop when they land. Obviously a heavy vehicle is causing a lot more stress in this situation. Add in the lux's love for pogoing its way everywhere and maybe thats why people mention strength probs. I know beebee has chnaged to stronger centres after busting 4.88s with 37s. Buts hes got a 3rzfe in his.
