epson printer genuine cartridges have a small microchip on them that senses ink levels - if the ink cartidges are refills the supplier may not have "zeroed" out the sensor in the cartridge so printer may think they are empty .
if you refilled them you have to buy a "gun" which zero's out the chips each time they are refilled .

It might seem stupid but they are the right number cartridge for that machine? A lot of the Epsons look very similar but have different numbers. If they are new you could still take them to your local refiller and he could zero the chip for you just to rule out a problem with the chip. What is the actual message on the screen, no ink or empty ink?

Yeah the cartridges are faulty, problem is most places won't take them back. You can send them back to Epson and they will replace them. It is just strange that all the cartridges are playing up it is usually only one. You could try clean the contacts on the chip on the cartridge with some metho.
