Usually the owner gets back to you pretty quickly..., at least within a day or two.
Communication is the key, if he isn't communicating, then be sure to mention it in the feedback. |

sometimes people go away, or get sick or their computer has problems. Give them a chance before leaving bad feedback or whatever. |

I call bullshit.
Mention that in your feedback, and also add him as a favourite seller. That way when he relists them in a month's time, you can stick it to him via Ebay.
If you feel bad about leaving honest feedback, remember that you could prevent someone else from being phucked over in the future.
Also, he cannot leave negative feedback for you either, sellers can only leave positive now.
If you are new to Ebay, don't be dissuaded by this experience - on the whole it is a good system...
Hey, PM me the ad number... Ill message him asking if he still has them and offer $200, see if I can flush him out... |

As you had legally committed to purchase the tyres, I'd be asking for a copy of the Police report. |

I would probably give him some grief like that too, but ultimately if the guy is newish to ebay and the price is way off what they're worth then he is not a total scum for not going through with the deal. |

Exactly right - a contract is a contract (unless you are Sonny Bill)...
If $100 is the minimum you want for an item, start the auction at $100, simple.
There are sellers who have over 20,000 sales with 100% positive feedback, it isn't that hard. |

We're talking about the real world though. If a big company made a mistake I'd stick to my guns, but if some seller who has never used ebay before made a mistake, I would not seriously expect him to give away six hundred dollars worth of tyres for fifty bucks.
Since you and I are familiar with ebay we wouldn't make a stupid mistake, but people do. So having lost no money, I would probably pick up the pieces and move on. A bit pissweak? Yes. But geez it is not like he took the buyer's money or anything, he is either telling the truth or he is being a bit of a wimp and backing out of a bad deal he didn't mean to get into. |

If they really were worth that much, how come no one outbidded our friend here? |

Look, I am not going to defend the seller and I've got no idea what the tyres were worth except that apparently they were a bargain.
My point is just that the seller may be a bit of a dope, but he is not a professional business man or tyre seller, and if he regretted the way he set up the auction or made a mistake with the minimum bid then it is not the same as a proper business shafting you. It might be just some ordinary person like you or your uncle who can't afford to let the tyres go for so much less than they're worth. I would not personally back out of an auction like that but I would not get that worked up about it if it happened.
There are real rip-offs out there and this sounds more like a mistake.
But hey... whatever! Call in the lawyers, take him to court! |

Inexperience is no excuse for going back on your word or contractual obligations. He should suck it up be a man and learn from it.
I made the same mistake when first using ebay, figured I could get more interest starting with 0.99c. Ended up parting with a diff for 0.99c one bid, was fairly pissed about it but was glad it went to a young kid with no money needing to fix his car for work.

i'm not as optimistic, he probably started the bid at 0.99 to try to get more interest, and to dodge some ebay fees... |

And you really think Ebay cares?
They set up their business based on a solid system with both positive and negative feed back. They're now set up so they drop negative feedback to save themselves having to manage the complaints.
What you really need to ask is there any point having positive feedback without the negative feedback? |

Yeah it's a bit of a cop out not being able to leave neg feedback if the situation requires it.
Although you could still tick Positive and then state in big bold letters "RIP OFF MOTHER FAR#@* ........ blah blah". So not all is lost |
