No need to bash the sh#t out of the crossmember just use a bottle jack and a piece of wood to spread the chassis and it will fall out ! no bashing required plus this way you wont be deafend from the noise !!!! |

I use a bit of wood to lever the cross-member down and out. I've lost count of the number of times I've had to remove it. |

I've changed the gearbox and transferbox on different occasions, also been in several times hunting oil leaks.
Yes I lever the crossmember out against the gearbox. It's not enough force to damage anything.
If you do want to whack it out, using something heavier works better. Like using a lump of wood instead of a hammer. A really big rubber hammer would be ideal. |

Well if ya have 2 trolly jacks and a nice level floor you will get the gearbox and transfer out in one go one jack under the transfer and one under the back of the bell housing or remove the floor pan and seats and lift out through the top with a engin hoist either way its no small task id prefer the first method as its a bitch to get the floor out and the seat boxes .....
Option 2 is take it out bit by bit this works well if ya dont have a trolly jack take off the handbreak drum and the backing plate of the transfer remove the input gear from the transfer as this is the stuffed bit you would be removing the box for id say then unbolt the transfer from the box and chasis mount and remove it first then take out the box separate ...
To get the X member out easy jack apart the rails a tad with a jack if this isnt an option i find a largish flat blade screwdriver works the best to remove it use it as a lever and work each side evenly and the X member will come out with minimal fuss and ya wont have shizz falling off above from bashing the fook out of it like the bashers have mentioned |
