Toyota hilux gear box question???

Hi
I need to know if a gear box from a 1989 Toyota hilux single cab 2.8 diesel solid front diff<<< Will fit into a 1994 toyota hilux sr5 IFS front end With a 2.8 diesel ???The 1994 has auto locking hubs and high range is electronic selected ..Will the gear box bolt into mine(the 1994 model)?/

what series box is in the 94mod R series or G?

Look at the compliance plate on the firewall under the bonnet... if they both same that same thing in the trans/axle field... then the boxes will be the same, the bell housings may be different in which case you just unbolt one and swap it over.

If the numbers dont match up... see if the bell housing pattern is the same and take a few measurements to make sure it will bolt up.

It will be on the plate on the firewall under the bonnet.

There is a line for Trans/Axel codes.
Your Axel code is a 4 digit code starting with "G" followed by 3 numbers.
The code in before this on the same line is your transmittion code, e.g. R150F or G52

Just went out and checked plate
Trans axle G52 And it looks like G285 it was abit hard to read,But the G52 is correct.The other 89 model ute is not here so i cant find out whats on that plate??

Chances are good the the ute will have a G52 as well, so all should be good. Should just have to swap your transfer onto the new box, I would expect the belhousings to be the same.

BTW your diff gearing is 4.3 with a 4 pinion LSD in the rear.

Yeah check the transfer cases. The 89 ute will have a gear driven one but the SR5 may be chain driven. Way to tell is the last cover (the one that the rear driveshaft bolts to, chain driven cases have a round shaped 5 bolt cover, gear driven have an oval shaped 7 bolt one).

Unfortunately not a straightforward swap if the transfer cases are different. Ironic because the gearboxes are given the same code, ie G52, but the output shaft for a G52 with gear drive t/f will be 21 spline, while same shaft for a G52 with chain case will be 26 spline. The gearboxes will only be the same up until the "transfer case adapter" (the bit that the t/f case bolts onto on the box).

If it works out like above, only option is swap the whole box and transfer from the ute into the SR5 (but transfer case mounts may not line up with crossmember). Or pay a fortune to a shop to strip both boxes down and swap the necessary bits from one to the other.
