Greetings all,
Had a great run on Friday afternoon in the Watagans till the diff blew on a very, very steep hill climb....... it did make it though!
javascript:emoticon(' ')
Ok, so I know nothing much about these Diffs (early 93 model disco, 3.5 v8) and I am just hearing around the grapevine that the standard diffs are not real great.
So, what are my options? and what are $$ that need to be spent in order to get something that will last, within reason of course?
Any help much appreciated |

i did mine in a simmular way earlier this year, best going arb and getting a locker and maxi or jacmac axles, but wont be cheap,or you can get the axles for around $700 per diff and get a new standed diff centre for a couple hundred, did u break a centre or just a axle?? |

Yeah I have really no idea what I did, except what the guys I was with told me. Mechanic will have a look at it tomorrow for the verdict.
But, it did put a whole in the housing and the diff oil was pouring out. |

i say you would have broke the pinnon and prob a diff gear or crown wheel, proberly put the hole in the housing from driving after it broke, when mine broke we took the stub axles out and undid the tailshaft then drove home with the centre diff lock in so only the front was driving |

Its not the first time a rover diff has failed like that.

i picked up a rear axle housing complete with brakes for $200. Fitted the diff over a weekend and kept the spare axles... sold the housing and brakes for $70. so replaced the diff and bought second hand axles for $130 and saved a few hundred in labour - you can do this your self easy... if yo can take the shaft and axles out your half way!
I now just make sure I dont give it heaps of loud pedal if I am just bouncing up and down and all crossed up... the patrol with ARB locker blew its diff at the next climb and its a much bigger and stronger unit - save your self the dough unless you are ready for a locker then head to Ebay and get one delivered from the US for a few hundred cheaper... |

Your best bet is to do have the Toy diffs under your rover otherwise breakage will always be an issue.
I went through 2 stock diffs, front and rear axles with 32" Simex.
I got all my kit and 30 spline axles to fit from Rovertracks.....It is worth every dollar as the truck is pretty much bullet proof when it comes to drivetrain.... |
