Flex well, used to be expensive to upgrade the suspension but with local suppliers getting more and more on top of this and the XJ being one of the longest running 4WDs unchanged in the US its now relatively cheap for a basic lift.

No less reliable than any other 4WD, rear diff is not the strongest, radiator is a bit dodgey and can overheat if not looked after and a few other bits and pieces.

Cheers
Steve

XJ's are great!

Get yourself a super reliable manual with the 2.5 litre turbo diesel donk - the one that comes with the top performing VM engine. You'll never buy another 4WD again.

The 4.0 petrol auto is a bit of a gas guzzler and is prone to overheating. Many people have tried to fix the heat problem (bonnet vents, different radiator, electric thermo fans, etc etc with mixed results). Some people love the auto though, even if they suck your wallet dry at the fuel bowser.

Better for you to go the manual 2.5 turbo diesel. Plenty of torque, frugal on fuel, and you'll easily get 500,000km trouble free motoring from that wonderful VM engine.

In stock form XJ's perform better than a GU Patrol off-road. True!

With a modest lift and 32" tyres you can tour the Australian outback with easy (ask GOJEEP - he does heaps of touring).

They can even be lifted higher (suspension lift) and fitted with 35" tyres which is great for comps - tough as nails!
