OK,
Problem: I want to try and get an alternate source of vaccum for the brake booster so I have a better range of alternators to choose from to custom fit to my V8 diesel engine.

At the moment, I got an alternator from a 2H toyota engine bolted up to it but it's not really in the right position. As it's so far away from the main pulleys and trying to keep tension on the belt... it keeps siezing the main bearing in the alternator over a period of probably about 12mths.(maybe my original bracket I made wasn't quite sufficent) But I want to try and get the alternator to sit a bit closer in instead of hanging off the side of the engine so far away. The problem being that the vaccum pump hanging off the rear of the alternator gets in the way of mounting it elsewhere, hence if I can find an alternate vaccum source, then I have a much larger range of alternators to chose from to put in it.

Sorry if that sounds a bit vague but it's late/early and I'm nearly falling asleep at work while I'm typing this out.

Cheers.

I considered the same thing with my 4runner, and found these...

Seems you can use an electric vacuum pump, and run any cheaply found alternator you want. I never got around to trying to source one in Aus however, but i dont reckon it would be impossible.

I don't know of anyone in Australia that sells them but these electric vacuum pumps are quite common on supercharged and big cam engines where insufficient vacuum is produced.

US$271.99 plus freight.
