Swivel hub rebuild Q

Hey guys,

just about to rebuild the swivel hubs. got whole new kit from patrolapart for 150 Smile

. all good quality bearings and seals.

just wanted to know that when i change the kingpin bearings can i use the shims that are currently there or will this stuff up my wheel allignment (??)

Stuck on how to get the kingpin bearings off to replace them with the new ones :( our bearing puller won't really work. would hot and cold work then lever them off? might just try and find a mech thats open tomorrow...

cant get the covers off? or cant get the bearings out?

I used a puller, and when that didn't work or if i didn't have access to a puller, i got a mate to help and we used two fairly big flat head screwdrivers to lever under each side, then used a drift and hammer to knock the shaft/plate section through.

Take car when you put the new bearings on that you dont damage the shaft or bearing (i use a socket that mates to the inner bearing race to hit on).

With your shims, you must have the same shims on the top AND bottom. Generally you'll find the shim layout that was in there should be fine.

They can be a bit of a bastard, but you just have to keep at it. Another thing i usually do is make sure the wiping surface of the knuckle is clean and free of rust/dags/dirt etc. Also double check that the wiper seal seats properly and mates up to the knuckle properly.

A lot of people i know dont do it, but i usually completely remove the swivel hub and hot wash it to remove any old grease, oil and metal filings. For the cost of an extra tub of grease its well worth it, plus next time you pull it to bits you can see if you have crook axle seals, water ingress etc etc.

Doing swivel hubs is an absolute prick of a job, so it pays to take your time and do it properly to save having to re-do it again in 12 months time.
