Gidday All,

Ive just been offered a 97 Troopy with lockers, etc quite cheap.

I realise that 75 Troopys have had a Problem with Rust over the years in the Floors, Winscreen, and Roof gutters.

Im just wondering if anyone has successfully removed Rust from any of these areas, without it all coming back in 6 to 12months time.

Obviously it has a lot to do with the panel beater and how good they are too!

Thanks for your input.

OH and by the way, are the Diffs, CV's, etc very strong on them???

I bought a troopy a few months ago and it turns out the rust in the gutters is a little worse than I thought. (I think I just pretended it wasn't there). Got quoted $4000 for a new roof but could justify spending 4000 on an 18yr old truck.
So I've got some steel on the way, an angle grinder, a welder and a few weekends to fix it section-by-section.
I'll let you know how I go. Haven't started yet, but will within a month hopefully.

I fixed all the rust in my 60 not so long ago.... and I'll tell ya, theres a shit load more there than you cant see!!!

I got a small piece of metal coathanger and took a profile of the shape... from the edge of the gutter to just over the top curve where it flattens out before the first ridge on the roof. I then went and seen a local sheet metal shop and the guy couldn't have been more helpful(he also bent my rear hoop up too). He couldnt do one long run for each side as it was a bit too hard, but I got 4 lengths @ 2.4mtrs long which was heaps to do both sides, just had to put a join in the middle which worked better anyway due to the curve of the roof and gutter.

I then cut one whole side out at a time, just on the top side of the curve, removed and cleaned all excess rust..... there was crap loads in there.... and put on some of that rust converter stuff and then some killrust paint. Then went about welding in the new rolled profile I had made up. A small smear of bog over the top and Bob's ya aunty.... I now got a roof gutter that will see the truck to her death!!

My suggestion is, if you want this fixed properly to keep the truck, take a profile of what you need to your local sheety and see what they can do for ya. I'm no panel beater or welder, but mine looks fine and will look better when the old girl gets a full respray soon. If your not up for the challenge, take the profile to the panel beaters and tell them how you want it fixed, but make sure you get one you can trust to do a good job. Some might just bog it for sake of ease once you've left the workshop and you'd never know until 12-18mths down the track Rolling Eyes

Ohh, one point though.... if you do it yourself, make sure you pull the roof lining back and get rid of the insulation stuff stuck to the roof..... this stuff is HIGHLY FLAMMABLE.... trust me, I seen this first hand when I was using a grinder one day!! Crying or Very sad

Goodluck bud. Wink
