Hi Deano, you have a NH 5sp ??
If so the rear 9" 5.29 is a direct bolt in (MB598486) about $660 + GST.
You will have the front 8" high pinion diff (super select) with the 5sp.
There is no 5.29 8" super select crownwheel & pinion set only a 7.25" kit for the smaller super select front diff (NH auto's & 2.5TDI's).
One option is to convert to the Gen 1 3.0 V6 8" low pinion diff (quite easy) and then MB241981 5.29 will bolt in ($550 + GST). But you will loose your super select function (still can run 4wd on bitumen just have to lock the hubs in first) and will need manual hubs. My contact in Japan has just done this conversion to his Gen 2 shortie and it was pretty straightforward. However you cannot get this part no anymore I got the last one for a US guy. However I have a secret source to a few more sets (ex Japan).
I wouldn't downgrade to the 7.25" super select diff either as strength could be an issue and the new ARB locker will not fit it (only the 8" front diffs).
If you had an NH auto you could do it all easily.
With 33"s and the 4.88's I just didn't think it needed 5.29's but with the Simex's (34.7") I think it's needed (but not essential) but thats another story.

Frank.

Frank,
I believe there may be another and possibly cheaper way of getting 5.285 diff gearing. The 2.5 litre J top V24C has this gearing with the 5 speed manual according to Js roots;

Could you possibly buy complete front and rear axle housings from a Jap importer and just bolt them up? I don't know what diameter the crown wheels are though.

Jon, the V24C has the small (7.25") super select front 5.29, you still need the whole diff, axle tubes and propshaft for the conversion. Aki had done this conversion already.
He then sourced a Gen 1 V6 8" front diff from a wreck and discovered much to his delight it had a 5.29 with lsd. I passed on the imfo about the install based on Shane's experience (that it is straightfoward and the 5.29 that fits it is actually from the rear of a Gen 1 diesel). He did the conversion which was pretty straightfoward so he can fit the new front ARB locker later on.
The rear 3.0 V6 5.29 is a direct crownwheel & pinion swap, it's the front that is tricky.
The NH Gen 2 3.0 V6 auto also has the small (7.25") front diff so a 5.29 is a direct bolt in but I don't think it will be as strong as the 8" unit. All other V6 models run the 8" front diff.

See the following matrix :-

Gen 1 Front 5.29 Rear 5.29
4 cylinder MB185457(7.25") MB241981(8")
3.0 V6 MB241981(8") MB598486(9")
Gen 2
2.5TDI & MB831032(7.25") MB598486(9")
NH 3.0 V6
auto

Gen 1 front diff is low pinion design.
Gen 2 front diff (super select) is high pinion design.
MB185457 is no longer available (deleted part) there is only one left in Japan.
MB241981 is only available via a contact in Japan (extremely limited supply maybe 6 or so left).
It has been confirmed that MB241981 fits the front diff of a Gen 1 V6.
It has taken 18 months to compile this imfo with the help of various people.
There are other 5.29 part numbers that I am still cross referencing but believe they are alternatives to MB185457 & MB241981.

Frank.
