Hi

I have (well not picked up yet) 1981 toy 2x diesel 74 thousand miles

I also have a 1980 4x4 that wont smog I am thinking of puting the axels under the diesel and using a zuk xfercase ( lots of people are using Toy axels in zuks) and others are using 1.9 VW diesels in Zuks .

since the VW diesel dosent tear up the Zuk xfercase ......

Or I may be wrong - How easy to mount the axels under my 81 diesel?

I think this would be easer than finding the right bellhousing for my diesel and then finding the right trans/exfercase.

Thanks

Chuck

Chuck i realise you are in the US and im not sure on what the go is with Smog laws but the easiest way to do this would be to fit the Diesel into the 4x4 Pickup. The engine mounts line up the same but im not sure on the gearbox combo you guys got over there in these 2 models as to weather the bellhousings will interchange.

You could fit the diffs and springs from the 4wd under the 2wd but it would be a lot of work. More than just doing a solid axle swap in an IFS Pickup as their is no mounts for the gearbox/Tcase and the front of the frame rails from the firewall forward are a lot flater than the 4wd ones.

I dont think the Samurai T/case will be able to cope due to the toy being a lot heavier than a zook but if you are happy to swap the t/case out all the time when it breaks then thats up to you.

I'm with Ruff, the 2WD chassis is different and it's a nightmare trying to convert. what gearbox etc is in the 4WD and which diesel engine did you pick up; it might be a simple bolt in.

cheers
