Best free antivirus I know of by miles. And doesn't dick around with your system in ways you don't want it to. |

Good to know AVG is ok
Been using it for a while now - but it was always in the back of my mind that "Free = not so good"
I feel protected and secure now - I will sleep well tonight - thanks guys |

Avast is also a good one similar to AVG if not better with more features and its free too, i highley reccomend both!!!
Also your antivirus cant cover everything on your pc, u need other spyware programs like ad-aware, spybot search and destroy & spyware blaster all used together to find 99% of the nasties, just an antivirus wont pick it all up. |

AVG works as well as any of the others, and it's free. Remember to update regularly.
I actually run a couple of antivirus products at once, as you often find that one will pick up things the other completely misses.
There a a number of free packcages on the web for download, some are better than others....main difference is in ease of updating files and the size of update files.
MAKE SURE YOU RUN A FIREWALL: www.zonelabs.com
I also run:
Spybot S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
and:
Hijack This (only recommend it if you know what you're doing)

IMHO
i see this everyday at work
computer comes in with a virus on it and guess what anti virus is on it AVG its free its crap and doesnt do the job that norton or other do ( norton isnt that good either but just about the pick of the bunch ) @ 40$$ you cant go wrong McAfee is a waste of time screws with you system and can leave it as unstable as a 12yr old on crack! Also one to try is Trend Micro Pc Cillin its not to shabby but!
I personally use Computer Associates E-Trust found it to be awesome never ever had a problem with it even running it on my server.

Well u have to tell the customer to run at least 1 antivi etc weekly if not more often and also use firefox if they dont already.
er posting hijack this is a bit dodge, only use this if u know what your doing people lol, this could be funny if someone deletes everything lol!!!
Do other people reccomend firefox? most people dont even know the dif, but the pc certainly does when its not getting infected from every crack and pron site.. |

the biggest issue with customers is getting them to update the antivirus... even with autoupdate turned on.. dont ask me how or why they turn it off... |

That setup is ok for 0.1% of the population, the other 99.9% can bugger any system they use. It's not all about the technology. There needs to be some user awarness too. |

I also use VET and its great but most peolple refuse to pay for anti virus software so I think that AVG is better than going bare back
My parents have run it for years no drama are your customers updating regularly? |

I'm very happy with Avast, use Sygate firewall with it... Both free... If I was goin to pay for antivirus, I wouldn't go past Nod32... Only problem I had with Avast was it doesn't like ZoneAlarm, will give you BSOD if used together. |

Don't know what everyone's issue with Norton's is...never had a problem and its protecting 15+ PCs at work - and half of the users have no idea whatsoever. |

The man is correct.
And these days some distro´s come with a nice shiny gui that makes it very easy to use.
Its free and its very easy to setup a dual boot pc. I currently am running a mandrake linux partition (going back to FC4 soon) and windows partition. Use linux for my day to day stuff, and windows when I need to edit using avid. No crashes, no viruses, no problems, and free. Extra software is free and easy to install with urpmi. |

ato be honest the only reason why I run antivirus on thei pc is because I hate nortans and it came free with the computer, I couldn't uninstall it so I installed something over the top which uninstalled it.
I have decided the best antivirus software avalible is divorce. onlyh reason i have gottten a virus since mine is cause I asked the ex to show me where I could get something, I learned that one pretty freaking quick. but he tells me his virus scanner picks up 2 -3 viruses a day, I wonder if he thinks maybe it's what he is doing with it that is causing the attacks? |

I use AVG and update it whenever I use the computer whether it turns out it needed it or not. It has certainly picked up a few viruses but I have never had an issue with it.
Maybe the sort of people who need to take their computer to a shop to get a problem sorted are the sort of people who don't realise you need to update your virus scanner daily?
I have sorted a few friends computers which have been virus ridden. They use various virus scanners between them but they all fit into the category above. Update?? what's that? |

And that 0.1% of the population are the ones who know about the differing vectors viruses use to infect a system, and close those doors..
I could not agree more user awareness is the key.. |
