internal cage

is anyone running a internal cage in a defender truck cab????

just wondering how they fit it in.... and if they arent, how are they getting around the rules to compete?

A mate mine runs one in a S3 truck cab (Very similar dash layout)

He has had to do lots of dash work to get the a-pillars right.

His set up is basically external 4pt + a pillar bars which come in through the roof.

Its to tight to get a internal 4pt, hence the external + internal a pillar bars..

Make sense???

the only internal 4 point cage on a fender i've seen is haultechs old fender that andrew e has now. they had to hack up the dash a fair bit to make it fit.

Awesome truck mate, but what a nightmare to get a cage inside.... looks like there wont be to many LR/Def is the new entry level winch events over here..... that just puts the price through the roof....no pun intended

shame we cant get by with a good exo.

Thanks.Try to extend the cab to get you some room! Otherwise you need a exo hoop at the back going through your cab and connecting with the front stays. IMO....m

true it may have had no roof, but weren't the lines of the cage inside the roof line.

im not sure, but thats besides the point anyway..... alot different to building and fitting a cage in a stock defender or series truck cab....

which makes it very hard to compete as i think all events require an internal cage.

just like most motor sport its a matter of money.... oh well

If you want to comp it, cutting a few holes in the rear of the roof will be the least of your worries.

true that may be... BUT as there is a thread in the comp section about an entry level event, i thought about it. it only allows 33 inch tyres and so on. i thought this may be a good way of having a go and keeping cost down.....

i have a hyd winch, NOT ALLOWED, i have MD low range gears NOT ALLOWED, but you are allowed 24v winches and different diff ratio's Rolling Eyes

my call is road legal, and apart from a cage would make an ok first time rig. im not out to win, just to finish..... i would have built an exo or a good rollbar, but building a internal cage on a daily driver is such a big pain in the arse that i wont consider it....

THIS IS MY ONLY VEHICLE. so with that comes compremise.

This is one of the reasons I havent finished my defender and it pisses me off IF they just allowed exo's in winch comps we would be laughing I'm turning mine into an extra cab to fit the internal cage the pedals will have to be shifted over and like many have said the dash will be chopped to bits by the time I finish all of this I'm sure they would have changed the rules to allow exos cussing

maybe we should start a land rover class winch challenge Laughing

Assuming these are CCDA events, has anyone raised this with the CCDA ?

Land Rover Defenders really aren't set up to have a fully internal cage, truck cab versions especially so. CCDA regs are pretty generic and little thought seems to have been given to the impact of some parts of the regulations on vehicles, like the Defender, where the body doesn't supply any part of the safety structure of the vehicle.

In the UK, Europe and USA either fully external or external front/internal rear designs are used for Defenders simply because it is the best and strongest way to fit a roll cage to the vehicle. There is no point in linking the cage to the body because it has no structural integrity, the cage needs to be linked to the chassis and a cage designed for a monocoque vehicle is neither applicable or particularly safe in a Defender.

I see no justification for insistance on an internal cage on a vehicle where the body work above the "waist" of the vehicle can be unbolted and removed as desired. Land Rover themselves used external front hoops when they developed their own roll cages for Defenders in partnership with Safety Devices. Defenders used on the Camel Trophy all had external front cage hoops even though the Discoveries, Range Rovers and Freelanders all had fully internal cages.

Challenge the rules, don't compromise your vehicle or it's safety trying to fit a cage design that was intended for a saloon car derivative. i was told I'd need an internal cage for the OBC too btw, my external cage does now have a new CCDA logbook sticker on it. There are some close ups of my cage in the youtube vids in my sig, especially the 2nd one.

Mine is Protection and Performance, I used to run SD in my Rangie but not sure who/where SD cages are these days since the original company went under a couple of years back. Heard rumours they were now being manufactured in eastern Europe somewhere but not sure what's happening with them.

P&P are local to me so nice and convenient for me to take my motor down there and have a custom cage built for it.
