Territory- Built Ford tough

I went down the road last night to pick up a 6 pack for me and the missus and as i was coming home i saw what i thought was lightening coming from the cemetery....... was thinking WTF.

Pulled up to the upper Heidelberg rd intersection to see a Ford territory in bits right next to me with someone yelling call an ambulance. Called 000 then jumped out to help. Here was this guy sitting in his car with no drivers door, the front pretty much non existent yet he was still alive and talking to us.

No-one actually saw what happened but about 100m up the road he had veered onto the wrong side of the road (at very high speed) and hit the first power pole, not just knocking it over but completely obliterating the bottom half so as the top half was dangling by the cables. He then somehow stayed straight to hit the next pole 50m down the road then came to rest a further 50m down in the middle of the road. It was a scene of absolute carnage. For a 100m stretch the road was covered in bits of power pole and car.

I cant remember what the back looked like (its funny how you forget what happened with the shock of it all) but he was basically sitting in a bare chassis with no doors and hardly any panels but the main cab was relatively intact. All the air bags had gone off and to be honest it still amazes me as to how this guy survived. (i'm assuming he made it through the night) Apart from blood all over his face he was relatively conscious and when the ambo asked what day it was he knew it was saturday.

I think its a tribute to the way they make vehicles these days and the strong standards that Australia sets for its cars. If it was an older car of similar design i don't think this guy would be alive.

And just as a rant, to the d!ck heads who sped through all the debris just missing people trying to help, just to get where they were going instead of going around...... grow a farken brain!

wow, thats pretty crazy stuff. Good on ya for helping out and calling the ambo. It could have saved his life.

It surprises a lot of people that people walk away from absolutely destroyed vehicles. Its because they are designed like that, as you said. Think formula one cars that crash, bits fly everywhere, yet the cockpit stays in one piece. The energy produced in the accident is disappated in the flying parts, and not into the central cockpit. This design technology has flowed through to todays on road vehicles- as has many other safety features.

Everyone I've met with a Territory raves about it. For towing, for whatever.

They don't quite do it for my purposes but they are a great car. Is there a diesel version yet? I know there was one on the cards.

They are an excellent car, I towed my 4Runner home from warburton on a tandem in the wifes, it towed brilliantly.
Long trips, we regularly go from melb to Junee (Wagga wagga) 6hrs straight and you arrive fresh as.
Airbags and safety gear left right and centre, luxury all over armsup

Glad to here the driver survived such a serious prang as well Very Happy

yes but should ppl that cant drive be allowed to survive these accidents only to cause another by not hitting a powerpole but maby hitting your car with youself and your wife and kids in it killing them all

In regards to territory's, obviously they are up to current safety standards. Although I've heard of rust problems as the paint can be very thin and rubs to bare metal under some of the body rubbers (rear tail gate).

Yes high speed stacks are usually the result of someone who should not be driving and as a result puts the rest of at risk.

ur telling me uve never ever sped before? dude i just lost a friend and another is in hospital as a result of a one off "hoon" u could call it, for those in the west the smash on high rd on friday night, he was one of the most sensiable guys i have ever know yet he slipped up once, most people can walk away and vow never to do it again, he cant

please i understand some of ur logic but tread lightly on these kind of subjects, u never know who it could be

Wouldn't that Audi have been cut up to get him out? Or did it actually break up that way on impact? I haven't seen a crash pic quite like that before.

Yeah it's terrible here, not only the hazard of trees on the roadside but also, where I live, quite a few corners that have been made completely blind by poor maintenance of vegetation. Including some private gardens that should be ordered to be trimmed back imho. I don't think every garden should be a slave to the needs of cars but there are certain spots that are a real problem.

That audi has been cut open like that. The pillars etc are way to neat to have been torn ... the jaws of life are cool.

As for the person saying they should not be allowed to drive again, you have no idea what your on about.
A simple couple of sneeze's could have resulted in a very nasty crash.

That area the power poles are litterally just the other side of the concrete of the gutter. Being less than a meter off course course could easily be fatal.

I've driven in the Philippines on a favourite stretch the wife calls my race track. There is a power pole ON A CORNER that is almost 2 foot into the roadway Shocked

Nice stretch of road though.....loved doing 120-140 in and out of slow cars. No posted speed limit, but its prob 60k. the bmw handled the corners so well. Just hated the traffic at either end of the "track".
