You have just made my 14 yr old son's day, he is stoked!!! Do you have cage specifications? I will be installing the cage before christmas, need to know what I am going to be up for $$$$, and the standard it needs to be built to. Planning on removing the Fiberglass canopy on the shorty and having a soft top for the rear, will this have any saftey implications for the comp??? |

Are you saying I should do the SSS winch challenge and not an xwc?
Will adjustable panhards allowed?
Would be keen on the gps stages.
You could penalize trucks like mine on a percentage points system where you only get 75% of your score as a penalty for having a mod. |
Hi, regards the 2 events of course I would rather see you at the XWC.
As I had said I had competed (only 4SS0 with some of the big boys, they and the rest of the field would make up 75% of an XWC field.
Yes adjustable panhard rods are allowed. But no adjustable upper or lower arms.
The only mods that will be allowed will be as the rule book. No exceptions.
Cheers

If you are fitting a soft top, you will have to check if all your body is under the steel part of roof. If not that section will have to be fitted with 3mm alloy or 1.6mm steel plate.
If you are local call in and have a talk with me.
Cheers

Ok a couple of questions.
A1. Chassis, body and doors to be compatible in that model range.
• Guards may be modified but no sharp edges allowed.
Q. - Does this mean we can cut the guards as long as we retain the inner guard and no sharp edges.
Winch:
Motors supplied by original manufacturer that requires no modifications to fit.
Q. – does this mean we can fit a warn xp 6.6hp motor to a xd9500 winch as there are no modification for it to be fitted.
My thoughts on Weapon of Choice
Make: Suzuki
Year: 1988
Model: Sierra Wide Track Long Wheel Base
Motor: standard 1.3L
Mods: Full 2” Exhaust and Extractors with sufficient mufflers to comply with DOT
Carby: remove standard carby and fit quad motor bike throttle bodies.
Cam: remove standard and fit lumpy.
Other Mods:
2” suspension lift
Power Steering
2” Body lift
Tube winch bar and 9500 or 12000 winch
Move fuel tank up two inches and make bash plate
Either simex ETs 32x9.5x15 or Maxxis M8090 Creepy Cawler 255x85x16 (33x10x16)
Diff ratio from 3.9 to 5.1 and twin air locked
Cromoly shaft and CVs from front and Cromoly shafts for rear.
Davif if you feel any of the above would not comply let me know as currently I am in NSW and wont be able to pop over for the BBQ.
Thanks James |

Hi Dave, I have a SWB GQ that has a LWB chassis Shortened to SWB spec, it is aprooved and has surogate number, is this OK? Proberly a silly Question but just checking.
Regarding Harnesses, I have spoken with an engineer and only Pre ADR vehicles can run a harness, all ADR vehicles must use retractable seat belts. Do you mean a harness built to a grade? Are SFI aprooved belts OK as they are not listed?
Regarding inner guards, is the removal of the plasic inside the GQ guard OK? My shorty does not have any plastic inners but all the steel is there.
Would MQ nuckles on a GQ diff be OK?
I have 33x13.5 maxxis mudzilla's, would a straight edge across the side wall n measurement to ground at 24psi be how you want the width checked?
I have most of the parts to build a vehicle to compete in this catagory but dont want to turn up to be sent home. |

Why no reduction gears ? I thought it would make it a bit safer . What about a penalty point system for every extra mod not allowed by the rules ? No reduction gears will put quite a few out as it is one of the more common modifications on stock vehicles . |

Hi Dave, I have a SWB GQ that has a LWB chassis Shortened to SWB spec, it is aprooved and has surogate number, is this OK? Proberly a silly Question but just checking.
A:- Need to know why you used a long wheel base chassis? It would also need to be measured if I get a good answer for the first question
Regarding Harnesses, I have spoken with an engineer and only Pre ADR vehicles can run a harness, all ADR vehicles must use retractable seat belts. Do you mean a harness built to a grade? Are SFI aprooved belts OK as they are not listed?
A:- You better go back to your engineer or change. Yes you need retractable belts for road use, but you can still get harnesses approved. I have just been through this one with DOT
Regarding inner guards, is the removal of the plasic inside the GQ guard OK? My shorty does not have any plastic inners but all the steel is there.
A:- Yes
Would MQ nuckles on a GQ diff be OK?
A:- No and why would you want to do that? as they are smaller
I have 33x13.5 maxxis mudzilla's, would a straight edge across the side wall n measurement to ground at 24psi be how you want the width checked?
A:- Tyre width is 330mm which is just under 13". Measurement is taken from the widest part of the tyre etc side biters to the ground
I have most of the parts to build a vehicle to compete in this catagory but dont want to turn up to be sent home.
A:- The best bet is get it cleared by me and remember the only person to give the correct is "Yours Truely"
Cheers

And yes NO means NO.
And if I was to set up a stock vehicle reduction gears would be the last things I would get.
Tyres, legal height suspension and diff lock are going to take your stock vehicle more places. I do not know anyone who has reduction gear in their family touring wagon.
But back to question and answer time.
Cheers

SWB chassis was rusted out and cracked (upper arm crossmember came right off), a LWB chassis was the only one that could be found at the time. The chassis conversion was done by creative at brendale.
Thanks for the prompt reply Dave. |

Sorry about that Lance.
As the rules state it must be a least an 8000 lb front mounted winch (not stored inside vehicle).
I have a very rough idea what you are talking about, and I do not think that the time allowed would be in your favour, and as per rules would not comply.
Please fill me in with more detail, in case I am wrong.
Cheers

I think he means this.
http://www.bushwinch.com.au/
think it would be useless in a comp personally. |

Mate no truer words.
There is an event for all.
Remember the so called "Big Boys" started somewhere, they had no event like this to wet their feet.
People are still jumping into the deep end of XWC and are able to get up and swim first time out. It is a good pool to come and have fun.
I know that I have rules in that people do not like or their vehicle may not comply, so what, as stated in last post the XWC will cater for those vehicles. The main thing with XWC is that you need a full cage from the "A" Pillar.
Keep the questions coming.
Make a point of talking to me at the EFS mini XI 22nd - 24th August at Cruiser Park.
Cheers

None, to be honest. But it would be a very worthwhile investment if you are out in the bush a lot, it gives piece of mind.
When you have your harness on, sitting in a vehicle with a full cage fitted you feel very safe in what you do, more so then in the same type of vehicle without a harness or cage.
So the only family tourer you will see a cage in, are the one's that are going to compete.
Cheers

Even if you have 36"+ tyres that puts you into the bigger class, there is nothing wrong with playing with the "Big Boys". The only thing that did put me into the bigger class was the 37" tyres.. I even had a 2.5 Hp motor on my highmount & still managed to come in mid field. |
