After a great weekend at the SSS winch challenge, and finally after several years of being pushed and proded, it appears now that we need a new winch challenge for the more standard vehicles etc entry class.
I am looking at conducting this Series starting in 2009 over 3 rounds.
Main rules will be:-
1:- Road registered (legal) etc the family shopping wagon
2:- 33" tyres, no wheel spacers
3:- Suspension has to be as supplied (plus 50 -75mm, no dual shocks, no "A" frame) and road legal modifications allowed
4:- Winches to be off the shelf, standard low or high mount. Main shaft allowed to be capped and rear reinforcing on winch allowed, standard width drums, no free spool etc etc
5:- No 24 volt unless standard, dual batteries allowed
6:- Pump fuel only
7:- LPG allowed on petrol only
8:- Full dash
9:- Safety requirements will be a 4 point internal cage, harness (4 point) and window nets. Must be approved as legal fitment to your vehicle and plated.
This will be a low cost event open to the average vehicle that is legal to drive on the road, but the owners want to have some fun.
Postive feedback would be great.
A more detailed rule book will be available in due course.
All competion rules will be as the Xtreme Winch Challenge.
Venue and dates will be advised.
This give you 6 months to get your act together.
If you have any questions please contact:-

I not so sure about the learner part TIGGR, more like LUNATIC would be closer but you get that hangin' out with Piggy.
Top weekend guys and a great way to go MMM, with the new class racing, this is just what we need.
Good luck with it.
Catch ya

A similar idea to this has all ready started at city view 4x4 park in beaudesert Peter is doing it it's called the city view trials. You don't not need a cage, harneses or nets it really is a entry level event much better for the so called (family wagon) than what your proposeing sorry Dave .
I don't know too many people who will chop up there daily driver up for a cage and put harneses in when they could do a similar event an hour out of Brisbane and not have too go to quite so much trouble. (or dollars) To have fun and still compete. Maybe look at tracks were you won't need a cage eg: stage 10 of sss today at crusier there was nothing really there that you would need a cage for just my thought's but will be interested to see other peoples ideas cheers. |

This is not going to be a trials event but a winch challenge so that means vehicles going over terrain that they were not designed to go over.
When any event requires moving a vehicle up or down hills or over rock or for that mater any speed involved where the vehicle may roll over, hit a tree or whatever "SAFETY & DUTY OF CARE" must be on your mind so therefore I will not relax these guidelines for anyone who wants to compete.
SAFETY comes with a cage, harness, helmets and window nets.
I have already reduced my normal cage rules to a 4 point internal and not a 6 point. So a wagon only needs a "B"pillar and 2 rear stays plus diaginals to comply, but a ute after inspection (inspected by whom as well as material, design and fitment to be advised ) may only require a 4 point outer cage to comply, otherwise it will still need the "A" & "B" pillar hoops.
By going back to 33" tyres and standard winches this will open it up for a lot more people.
But remember they must be registered and road legal, not purpose built race trucks.
Just remember you can go to, 50mm body (approved by QT), paper work will need to be sited, legal 50 - 75mm suspension and 33" tyres.
People may need to go back too legal size tyres and at the moment on a Cruiser or Patrol 33" is the size.
SS will be designed so a wagon can get around the course without fear (if they do the right thing) of panel damage. It will be a lot slower then an Xtreme Winch Challenge and you will not be expected to do the same type of SS that they may compete on.
One other thing you will require at least a front locker.
Cheers

is it possible for you to show an image of the 4 point setup for a ute.do you mean the hoop style bar behind the cab with the struts back down to the tray.sounds like a great way of getting into the competition scene |

I agree with acebryan, family wagons are out every weekend at 4wd parks etc 4wding, winching all types of terrian without cages as like most of them dont want to start hacking their vehicle for the odd event. I think a lot of courses could be set up to stop speed and have no risk winch pulls like stage 10 at SSS. You still see a lot of organised night navs completed in extreme terrian without the cage restriction. Without this restriction I think you would get a lot more entrys, (even if you just enforced having window nets).
In saying this I see your response and realise you won't relax this rule, but still wanted to express my opinion. Cheers Mike |

To keep this the way it is intended:-
Freespool and wider drums - NO
Upgraded brake shaft - NO
24volt - NO
6hp motors - Now YES (changed 5th August)
Diffs - Ratio changes only
Reduction gears - NO
GU into GQ (diffs) - NO
Motors - Vehicle model range only
Turbo's - Diesel only
Cages on utes will be allowed, must be built to "Mine Specs" I will put these spec up when I have received them. Otherwise 4 point internal "A & B" pillar. As for the internal cages on wagons:- Wagons that are supplied to mines are sometimes fitted with an internal roll cage system without "A" pillar protection, these are a bolt in assembly as well. Again I will get spec for this type of cage.
Cheers

EXELLENT... I`m sure this will be very popular with a broad range of vehecials able to compete in a more or less standard class. Of the shelf hydro low mount ok? Great idea. |

I am trying to make this as cheap as possible and not have people building winches. There is too much hidden work you can do with a PTO. And that being the case it would lead the way to stretching the rules.
So without going on anymore the simple answer:- NO
The only hydraulic winch that will be allowed is the OXE Winch, but it has to be off the shelf and powered by the Power Steering pump as fitted to that make of vehicle, not a seperate pump.
Cheers

Be very careful using this description for a cage.
ROPS for Mine spec is not what i would trust in a 4x4 event.

Good work Dave.
Dont relax the cage, we need them for safety.
The last thing we need is for a vehicle to roll into a tree and have the tree collapse the centre of the roof on impact. |

was speeking to mick of the forum today and he was telling me that TJM are fitting CAMS spec 6 point roll cages to mining vehicles as we speak either bolt in or weld in.
apparently it was the mines that put up the money for the R&D.

Great idea Dave, There are a lot of people out there who cant afford to run a full on winch car, however they would love to compete. I think this comp makes it more affordable. Most guys out there already have this gear all they need to do is have the roll cage installed and there good to go.The entry fee also needs to be kept reasonable. Organize it and I will be there. |

Cage:- Cage if on ute has to be to mine standards, and wagon has to be 4 point internal built to same standards.
Motor:- NO standard fitment to that model only.
Remember this is a LEGAL ROAD VEHICLE event for standard vehicles. I am quite sure that some people will have to remove gear to be able to get into class.
I now own a second comp truck:- SWB nissan (just need cage)
I will have a vehicle rule list up by the end of next week on my web site.
So please keep sending in questions.
Cheers

This event is designed for road going 4wds with legal modifercations, so that means.
Drop boxes :- NO
Suspension:- 1/3rd more increase in bump stop height allowed. So a 2" - 3" lift on a Patrol or Cruiser would keep it on the legal side.
I have started work on specs, just waiting on more info on mines type cages fitted to wagons and utes.
Cheers
