Piranha Pursuit 15/16th November, 2008 at Walhalla/ Erica

The Piranha Pursuit thbis year will be held around Woods Point, Abefeldy, Erica, Walhalla, region of Vic.

We will endeavour to throw in all the hard tracksin the area. Navigation will be kept to an easy/ medium standard as we will like to have the standard of driving hard.

Start will be about 10am and conclusion will be about the midnight hour.

Fuel will be available at Rawson, as the Rawson General store will provide us that service.

Although it is some time to go entries have almost filled to our permit allows.

We have about 10 spots left.

Hey Pursuiters here's an update.

Half of you will start at Aberfeldy with a half way point at The Springs. The other half will start at The Springs and half way point will be Aberfeldy. That way we half the traffic congestion. My GQ wagon on LPG and Petrol will do entire course with out refuelling. I will take a jerry can and leave it at start/finish so I can get get back to Moe. That might help you guys estimate fuel.

I am pre-driving Springs to Aberfeldy this Saturday and then doing Aberfeldy to Springs on Sunday. If any one wishes to tag along (can not then compete) please call me and arrange. We will be driving in same area as Navrun on Saturday and on Sat night will camp with the Navsters.

Hey hobzee , can you be more specific with the fuel estimate. Not knowing the size of your gas and fuel tanks means I cant work out the consumtion . Im on straight gas , so I need a rough idea of how many klms we ll be doing . Cheers shane.......

Bagsy we do the tracks they have got planned on a100lt gas tank wich we only get 240kms to

and we alsohave another 60lt just incase

Last time we marshalled a stage for Rudi we Killed Two range rovers and a Bog stock standard 2.8L hilux on Simex's won the stage...

My advice, bring ya pucker pants and ya thinking cap... A few bollards, a bit of bunting and some nicely placed witches hats will turn an easily driven hill into... well a not so easily driven hill...

Hi everyone doing Pursuit...

You should all know where you are starting from and at what time. Your shcedulled start time commences whether you are ready or not. If you miss your start then you are using your own event time and day light to set up the tent and dick around. When you get to the half way point and back to the finish - you technically don't finish until you have submitted your notes.

Remember it is not timed with the exception that there is a 7 hour curfew on both stages as there needs to be a point where we call the event to an end. The slowest team may well win the event on points.

Hey all... Got back an hour or so ago...

We had the SS on fulton's with the two compulsory winches out of the creek? We had a great time organising it and hope that every one enjoyed competing it.
Was good to see some of the more experienced teams having difficulty coming to terms with having to take there time and THINK about how they were going to attack things.
Also, i am a little bemused be the comments of the three hour wait on our stage :S
We know what time every car arrived and left and only one car waited three hours and that car spent a good portion of that time effecting repairs to there vehicle...
We wont appologise for the delay as the course was extremely easily conquered in 10 minutes with no penalties yet some of the "Top" teams took nearly half an hour!..
Well done to every one who attempted the stage and congrats to those who completed it.

Missing your stage notes Ruffy?

Just got home, was fun weekend Very Happy

The first time I had done the pursuit and really enjoyed it. Very dry up there I dont think they got any or much rain this week. Fairly straight foward nav, and driving wasn't too much of a challenge either thanks to a lack of rain. Some great tracks up that way though.

A few teams had some mechanical issues:
*The Rough Rider crew busted wheel bearings, an axel, a spindle and a break rotor in the front right.
*Evan and Rick (MudRhino/GUQuik) had drams and didn't compete in the 2nd of 2 stages (overheating I beleive)
*The Road Runner guys turned their GQ into a petrol/electric hybrid. A 6.0l chev being used as the petrol componant and their starter motor coming on by itself making up the electric side Laughing

*Cam and Kynan in the blue rangie had ignition trouble but managed to finish the event.
*Snatch Racing, Aaron and Mark in the red hilux snapped their A frame off the rear diff.

That's all I can realy remember from our group (petrol/gas cars)

I think that taking the 10 point hit for not doing half of Ruffy's stage was probably worth it for us. I'm sure we would have racked up more than 10 points trying to complete it! Embarassed

We flatted a simex half way up the climb on Toomstar Tk, and discovered we had a crack in the chassis near the PS box... cussing

Boy Ruffy is someone a little sensative today (not enough sleep)

I'm as grumpy as but thats just normal for me (with or without sleep)

Your SS was a great stage but when you have to wait over an hour to have your shot at it. It then comes to a point where you either have to miss it completely which would be a shame or risk cuting and running if you decide to stay. Which a lot of competitors had to do (including us and we were the fourth team to arrive).

From my experience your's was the only stage that this occurred on and maybe should be a consideration next time an SS is set up

Either way we loved the event, had a ball, and the Old girl made it home, all be it just. She's home and waiting for some much deserved maintenance over the next couple of weeks to make ready for Xmas.

Thanks again to everyone involved it was an awsome event and lok forward to competeing again next year, espeacially a Ruffy stage.

Hey man, Ruffy's SS was drivable in under 10 minutes easily as we had many teams do this,
the problem was we sat around for 3 hours waiting, after setting up the stage for the first car to arrive, then as he was doing it 4 vehicles rocked up at the same time followed by another 3 in the next ten minutes. cussing

There was obviously a big hold up in the stage before us or some navigational errors landing eight vehicles on us basically at once so we dealt with it as best we could, like multiple driver briefing on rules etc.

At the end of the day sometimes these things just happen, but hey being out and obout driving around the bush is still better than sitting at home or being at work surely???

The event was about time management. You didn't have to wait around for an hour, you could have come back. Some teams did this.

You'll probably find, from your experience, that ours was also the only stage that had any sort of technical difficulty about it! Remember, we arrived, set up a stage (and we reckon a good one at that), ran it, packed up and went home. The start intervals weren't my doing!.. Next time i'll consider running a boring 2 minute stage as well.

P.S. I forgot to mention that of the first six cars FIVE came in from the wrong direction... Maybe if everyone stayed on route there wouldn't be as big of a hold up?? Food for thought.

Nice one Ruffy - taking it like a man..

Almost every Nav event that follows a set path has issues with convoy management. Hence the other Navruns you plot your own course. But Pursuit must follow this format to be what it is. I'm pleased it was just as minor as it was.

Carnage report is almost all attributed to vehicle set up or poor maintenance. Lots of dudes use Pursuit as a shake down of bugs for the bigger outback or cliffhanger events. No incidents in second half as all bugs ironed out in first half. Well done to Bruce Borchardt for not only driving his top race truck all the way from NSW but also for building a class 1 comp rig comparable to the very best from scratch and being able to drive it home from maiden trip..... back to NSW without a trailer.

Worst incident was the photographer driving home at midnight - lost it just out of walhalla and tow truck needed. See - I told you all the worst accidents happen on the road.

Special thanks to marshals attending and making Pursuit what it is ... a GREAT event. Thanks also to Alan at Piranha for the sponsorship...again.

That's it for me .. my last weekend event as an organiser. Hanging up my gloves and just running Cliffhangers (with Rudi). I first met Rudi when I was setting up the very first Yarraman Pursuit (later being the Simex and then the Piranha) as he used to come on prep drives and we used his maps.

Congratulations and thanks Hobzee. At a quick countback (and looking in the trophy cabnet) I think i've competed in 18 Navruns, 2 Cliff Hangers, 2 Pursuits, 1 amazing race and an after dark under the Direction of yourself and Doodle boy and assisted at three or four events. Every one has been a pleasure and while we have had discussions at times, for the most part the events have been professionally coducted, well organised and had difficult but not dangerous terrain and/or navigation. I respect your descision to take time out for the family but expect we will see you involved in some way down here, who knows, maybe you'll be strapping the harness on Wink

Either way, Thanks for the years you've given us and i wish you the best with the Cliffhanger and future endeavours.
