Drivers who speed through a single red light could soon find themselves slugged with fines of more than $900 under the State Government's plan to install fixed speed cameras at Queensland intersections.

Drivers will be stung twice - once for running a red light light as well as for speeding, - when plans to digitise the state's 34 red light cameras are eventually rolled out.

Drivers will be pinged a standard $225 for running a red light, while speeding penalties can range anywhere from $100 to $700.

That means red light leadfoots could pay up to $925 with the single flash of a camera bulb under the new scheme, announced last Sunday as a way to curb the state's mounting road toll.

Police Minister Judy Spence yesterday confirmed motorists who sped through intersections when lights were still green or amber would also be penalised.

"Speeding and failure to comply with a red traffic control signal are two separate and distinct offences. So if there is evidence of two offences police would prosecute both offences," Ms Spence said.

The brisbanetimes.com.au yesterday revealed the Bligh Government stood to reap more than $60 million a year from the introduction of fixed speed cameras, prompting criticism the scheme would be used as a taxpayer cash grab.

Shadow Police Minister Vaughan Johnson today accused the State Government of "blatant revenue raising", while Queensland's peak motoring body, RACQ, revealed the motoring public was equally skeptical about its motives.

Questions have also been raised about the effectiveness of the plan.

"There is anecdotal evidence to support that more fatal accidents occur on major highways, not at congested intersections," Mr Johnson said.

"I therefore don't see how the speed cameras attached to red lights is anything but a concealed bid to raise revenue."

"While I support speed cameras, police presence on our roads is the answer...the sight of a police vehicle on the road does more to deter motorists from speeding than anything else."

But hang on, wouldn't you have to be running a red light and doing about 190 in a 100 zone to get the full $900 fine? If you did that you'd deserve the penalty and worse.

The one just around the corner from me still seems to get plenty of customers, despite being WELL signed and having been there for a number of years now Confused

Not a fan of speed cameras, but have to say the ones at intersections are a good move, especially after almost being cleaned up a heap of times on the motorbike when taking off from a green light.

Red light cameras are the only "safety camera" I believe in but when sitting on the one on Northbourne Ave & London Cct waiting for the light to go, there is always one that geos through & sets it off, cant help stupidity.

I agree with what everybody is saying in regards to the deserving it part however I would have thought that most of the 'states mounting road toll' was due to more sleepy drivers and such... I mean there were another 7 on QLD Roads last weekend and I thought they were freeway related.

Correct me if I'm wrong though as I didn't read the articles on them.

on a different note... last sunday at about 4:30am we left a servo and headed into the far right hand lane (as we had to do a uturn), the lights had obviosly gone green for us to turn before we had reached them they were orange, as we were doing about 10klm/h (if that) we proceeded throught he orange taking it wide so as to clear the 6meter boat on the trailer behind us....

I think you will get one. The Light was Orange before you proceeded into the intersection you should have stopped.

IIRC, you should be safe if you've entered the intersection on the amber. I remember reading somewhere that the camera activates a quarter of a second or so after it goes red. Sounds like you triggered the sensors for the straight-ahead lanes?

Do you mean you ran the red light displayed for the through traffic (because you took the corner wide), but you were turning on a green arrow?

I've done similar; driven straight through a red arrow (half in the turn lane) onto a through lane, got flashed but nothing in the mail. Wrong still, i know Laughing

You have to cross the line when it is red to be illegal, although taking it wide may not be ideal.

yeah as stated, the light was orange when we crossed it but I beleive the light was triggered by us taking it wide so as to clear the boat.

This was not dangerous at the time as there was no other vehicles in the area and all lights except for ours where red.

Now will go through lights at 50 and slam on brakes on Orange

In qld you only have to be doing 40k over to get a $750 fine and 6mths suspension. So if you go through a red at 101 in a 60 zone that will get you the $950 fine. Still much cheaper just to stop. Also you do have to cross the line on red to get a fine thats why it takes 2 pics, you have to be b4 the line in the first pic and over it in the second pic. If your over it in both pics your fine.

times many. it is as dangerous as speeding, and more likely to cause an accident.

if your car is pre 2006, the ADRs allow 5% error either way. if you get pinged within a few km of the limit, you will get off. more to the point, you will just not get fined.

Id consider it a dare going through a camera at exact speed, remeber you can loose you licence.

Even on a jackass style dare id never hit a camera at speedo reading, crazy to try it.

I will always keep at least 10-15% below.

I need my licence for work and dont feel like going to court fighting it.

Don't know about them, but it sucks that if you have a heart attack and die in your car (not crashed, but found dead in a car in a ditch, etc), then that is considered part of the road toll. Like all stats ya have to take everything with a grain of salt.

As per cameras, if you do 100kph through a red light in a 60zone you really are an idiot, and deserve a fine and lose ya license! Smile

It's not in the same category as getting booked for a dirty number plate or 104 in a 100 zone! cussing

I like how captain bligh used the road toll on the long weekend to help justify this.
And here I was thinking that most of our road deaths didn't occur at intersections.

Just another grab for cash from our lack luster government.

Unfortunately while I may disagree with your reasons this will now be the norm. I have a feeling the incidents of accidents at intersections will increase. I have no complaints with red light cameras at all but the idea of sticking speed cameras in there as well does annoy me. More for the annoyance it will cause due to the actions people like txhog will take.

The rationale behind the multi cameras are this. If you have time when sitting at the lights, have a gander at the cross traffic and when the lights turn amber how many floor it to get through. Most of them do make it , but some leave it just a bit too late and the lights turn red before they cross the stop line. That is the most dangerous time especially for turners who are within the I/s and starting their turn. Some turn on the amber Shocked

hoping the the oncoming do the right thing. Attend a lot of serious injury accidents at these I/S 's.

The impact speeds are just so much greater due to the drivers wishing to beat the lights.

It is hopeful that the approaching traffic change their driving attitudes and approach the amber at the I/S, at a speed that will enable them to actually stop without resorting to the loud pedal.

Revenue collecting? or attitude adjustment. Most times the picking of the pockets and taking a few demerit points is the only way to 'adjust' drivers respect for the traffic lights.

As long as people cruise down their 10 - 15% I don't mind, it's the people who do their 65-70 in a 60 zone, weave through the traffic and then slam the brakes on at the white line down to 50 then accelerate away once through the intersection... It's worth considering though that most speedo's read in the "-" actual speed, both my Tritons are -5% - that's enough of a margin for me to sit on indicated speed through all speed traps.

we live on a narrow street with a straight of about 200 hundred metres and it has a sharp bend on each end.
The idiots on bikes and in cars see how fast they can go and it ranges from mums and dads picking up there kids(it is at the back of a school)to trailbikes (even seen a few off duty cops in uniform speeding) .
We got onto our local member and she promised more police radars still to this date i have not seen 1 radar in this street and as said it is a school road.
6 months later a young motorbike rider was killed.
I am scared i am going to witness a child or adult being struck and killed.
So i believe more static patrols would have a bigger effect on deterring these mindless idiots.
