Fitting 33"

A buddy of mine has 1991 Montero 4 door. I believe it would be a Gen2
We are looking to fit in 33":

- What lift would be needed? Who can supply it in the US?
- What ring and pinion ratio would be needed to properly gear it

prob 2" lift to err on the side of caution, as for gearing i just got some 32"s put on and i prob wont worry bout gearing for a while

Does it clear the 32" well enough? Who makes your lift kit....is it available in the US.
For 33" do i need more lift?

all as you need will be rear springs and shocks you can wind up the front torsions to suit

Is your friend in the US I as well? If so, 91 here is the last of the Gen 1s. The US market gets them a year later, and without some of the cool stuff our mates down under, and in other places get.

Get a set of mid-90s Montero rear springs and crank the t-bars. Assuming 33x12.5s, you will need different wheels for offset/backspacing, plus you want to go with at least 8". Lastly, you will likely need to trim the wrap-around ends of the front bumper.

They guys on this board a great. They wheel hard a break things that most don't on a Montero/Pajero. Pretty sure the first SAS jobs were here. At least for GenII SAS. Quite sure the most are here. You should also join up on 4x4wire.com.

Will the axles and CR&P take the 33" assuming the truck will be locked front and rear ( ARB).?
What is the weakest link usually that breaks first in tough/locked situations?

The weakest link is usually the skinny-pedal actuator (driver giving it too much gas). After that, I'd say the CV axles, however, my 88 (smaller rear diff) has been locked front and rear (ARBs) and with 33s for over three years, doing some hardcore wheeling, and I haven't had any trouble.

The stock diff ratio on about 99% of US Gen I Monteros is 4.625:1. I upgraded mine a couple years ago to 5.29:1, but the gears are hard to get, are expensive, and aren't quick to arrive in the US (mine took 4 months to arrive). Last I knew, you'd want to check here for Mitsubishi 5.29 gears.

As McV said, you should also sign up on 4x4wire.com. There are a whole lot of US-based Mitsubishi wheelers on that site (McV and me included) who are very knowledgeable about details particular to US models.

Oh, and you can throw 33s on that 91 without any lift at all and still be reasonably okay. As mentioned, you'd need to trim the front bumper end-caps. You'd also need to slightly bend forward the splash shields which are located at the front of the front wheelwells. This can be done by hand.

sorry for the slow reply mate it clears well with the lift flexs really well limiting factor in the picture below is the sway bar, its disconected from the chassis but its not fully removed so its still stopping it a bit. i used EFS shocks and west coast suspension springs

My 95 took 33s with the fronts t-bars cranksed a little. Not sure if you NEED some non-factory wheels that are wider and with betteroffset/backspacing. Should get some 8" though for 33s. They clear the bumbper ends except on a tight turn under fuller steering lock,like when turning into the driveway.

I will say this, I put my 33s with steelies on for the winter (from off my 87 which gets parked) as my 95 needed new tires for winter's snow and money was tight. My 95 has 177HP vs. 151 for a 92. My 95 without gears does not turn them as nicely as I'd like for daulit driving. (The 87 is a turbo StarQuest motor and turns them fine.)

I want bigger for the replacement tires that the 95 needs, but will stop at 32x11.5 and mount to the factory alloys.

The 33s fit my rear fine in general. But, with the front cranked, once you load up the back, it sits a little ass low for my preference. I put some coil spacers in for about 1".

Our lucky mates down under can scavange springs from the likes of a Patrol. For us, we have to buy taller, or go with spacers.

As for 4x4wire.com, the Mitsu site most definitely is not empty! It gets more traffic than here I'd say. I'll also be quick to say that it is likely because they wheel like madmen here! I've only heard of one broken Gen II rear axle in the US. They spit them out in OZ on a regular basis. armsup

There is most definitely a Mitsubishi section there. I'm on it pretty-much daily. If you are having troubles finding it, post up what URL you are going to. As McV said, it's busier that the Mitsubishi section here on Outerlimits.
