For the last few days I have ben fretting as my NJ had been making very very bad noises - sounded like my kingswood when the diff was dead. Had a few looks and finally found that the dust gaurd on the tailshaft - gaurding the rear seal of t/case was loose off the shaft and rattling around. I pulled the tailshaft out and removed it.
Questions: Is the guard vital and to replace it would it be easiest to get another tailshaft?
lost about 200mls of transfer case oil .. Will this be bad .. is so where is the filler? Cheers

The guard I think you are talking about fits to the T/C, not the tailshaft so changing the tailshaft will do nothing for you.
The guard is just a tight fit on the rear extension housing of the T/C. Put it in place, put a piece of board on the back and tap into place with a hammer.
The T/C filler is on the left side of the case, about a 19mm bolt I think. Obviously not the one at the back on the bottom, that's the drain. Just fill it until fluid starts to run out. |

OK cheers ill see if it fits back in ... it was floating around in the housing so maybe its buckled but if it stays back in obviously it would be preferable. I was just assuming it was pressed onto the tailshaft .. dont know why. |

On mine, the filler plug lines up nicely with the torsion bar, so I can't get a socket on there - went and bought the correct size open/ring, and it now lives in the Paj toolbox. |

I've had the exact same problem for about 10 years with my Hilux.
I don't want to fix it because a quiet car can be a pedestrian killer! |

I pulled mine off and bent the tabs in a little on the inside of the guard. This made the fit snug again and have had no problem since (I did have to use a piece of wood and hammer to the guard over the rear of the tail shaft). With out the guard you run the risk of letting the rear transfer case seal wearing prematurely. |
