Sperm donor ordered to pay lesbian couple
December 5, 2007 - 7:28AM
A British firefighter who donated his sperm so a lesbian couple could have two babies is being forced to pay thousands of pounds in child support.
Andy Bathie, 37, initially agreed to help Sharon and Terri Arnold after being assured he would not have to be involved in the upbringing of their young boy and girl or have any financial responsibility towards them.
But the British government's Child Support Agency has begun docking his pay to force him to contribute to the children's upbringing because the lesbian couple have split up.
Mr Bathie has launched unprecedented court action in an attempt to ensure he cannot be recognised as a legal parent to the children.
"These women wanted to be parents and take on all the responsibilities that brings," he told the Evening Standard newspaper.
"I would never have agreed to this unless they had been living as a committed family.
"And now I can't afford to have children with my own wife - it's crippling me financially |

Fark me, I'd be happy to have a slighly stuffed wrist in exchange for half a million.
He is probably one of those people who is terrified of Indians because he watched the Temple of Doom too many times as a kid. |

The lesbian who doesn't have custody (ie. the strap-on wearer) should be paying the maintenance.
I wonder if the bloke could claim custody since he's in a married relationship and the lesso's are single??
------
As for the $1/2mill ruling against connex, how farked up is that? It's ridiculous settlements like that which fark the system for legitimately injured people.
If it were a workcover claim he'd have got SFA, but as a lowlife spitter who dangerously crossed tracks and was obviously a fare evader, he gets $500,000
And they say crime doesn't pay. Next he'll double it by selling his story. Can't wait for the book launch
------
That's just farked Judges needs fVcking |

is that him on the left?
even though he was called "Daddy", he wasnt part of the family, and was never meant to be - thus he should have to pay phukyn nort. |

Confusing as all that is, it doesn't seem to me to change the basics all that much. In fact it is a weaker defence than I was expecting... so he got involved, they still seem to have agreed pretty clearly that he wouldn't be financially responsible for the kids before it all started.
If push comes to shove and the kids can't be supported by anyone else then that's one thing, but it's the "two mothers" who should be stepping up first for this imho. That's what they'd have to do if they'd used an anonymous donor. |

But you can't agree to father a child and not be financially responsible unless it is done through regulated sperm banks. Seems that this bloke wanted to be involved when it suited him but then decided to walk away.
Him taking paternity leave when the second child was born shows it was more than just a casual arrangement. |

If they had persued support from the outset I would agree, but it suited them at the time as well. Until it got hard from the gurls .. one buggered off and the the other is left bleating .. wo is me how do I support them ..
he took on the role of an Uncle, not a father (a father looks after a kid more than once a month). Given the kids age that is most likley less than 2 dozen times. I had looked after a nice and nephew more often than that. |

I agree it's all a bit messy but bottom line, the two mums should be getting the knocks on the door and the garnished wages first (or the mum who nicked off should), and only if they really can't provide properly should the father be getting this kind of hassle.
I mean if we are going to allow lesbian couples to have children and be treated as families - which I support - then we need to put the same responsibilities on them as we would conventional parents.
Otherwise we are creating an environment where the only way a lesbian couple could have kids is with an unknown father. Now how is it better for a child to have a completely unknown father (and no financial support from him) than to have a known, chosen father, who can act like a bit of an uncle, but not be at risk of financial disaster.
I guess I am just looking at the bigger picture a bit... surely it's better if lesbian couples can make legally sound arrangements so that they can have a child and know the sperm donor, without the sperm donor having to live in fear of wage garnishing for the rest of his life. |

Next we'll have adoptive parents hitting up paternal parents for maintenance $$$. It's just ridiculous, and so is the judge who supported it. |

'Expert' on sperm donor this morning ...( would make an interesting business card) stated that Australian sperm donor law is different , more stringent that some overseas and it may not be a prob here.
Had the lesbian couple gone through a proper agency then it may have been a non issue. They did it by a DIY home issemination kit.
Still it just may make sperm donation in the rest of the world subject to a licencing agreement.... |
